I'm an aircraft mechanic and it only takes me like 5 minutes to change out those inner panes, try not to break them though because it cuts into the time i spend raiding the galley for snacks

I think it also acts as an easy way to apply tint to the windows without having to mess with the exterior one.

The other reason the interior window is there... to protect the plane from idiots.

Aircraft mechanic here. It’s mostly there to keep people from scratching the expensive exterior window. You can (and I have) beat on the exterior windows with a hammer and they won’t break easily. I also think it probably helps with sound and thermal insulation. Probably helps with UV some as well.

"There are reasons. I don't know what they are" is going on my tombstone.

Most planes actually have 3 windows, the exterior one, the interior one and the middle one. The tiny pressure equaliser hole in the middle one. The hole is used to equalise the pressure in the cavities against the middle window.

I think the ( UV ) tinting is on the inside one because it's easier to change and has a life span. That's not from an official source.

The outside air temperature at cruising altitude is something like -55°C so I imagine the inner window isn't just providing insulation it's physically protecting you from getting a cold burn by touching the outer window.

Depending on the manufacturer and the airline sometimes they'll also have a certain degree of UV/glare resistance to make it more comfortable for the passengers

I am an Aircraft Mechanic. As an Mechanic i can confirm that interior windows are to stop the passengers from licking the exterior windows.

Actually the interior window has a special film coating that blocks certain frequencies on the EMS, these frequencies are associated with gremlins, so it makes it so you cant see any of the gremlins when they are crawling around the wing

Fourth reason: to keep people from trying to break the outside window.

Also protects the passengers from static discharge, which is quite painful and is very dangerous for those with a pacemaker. Not all aircraft windows are created equal, nor are the mechanics who install them. There's a conductive sealant called out for most exterior window installs, but most places don't use it for the cost.

It also stops condensation developing inside the plane, you'll notice condensation collects temporarily when you take off, and disappears when you land. Some people freak out when condensation is there but it's a good thing

That's why you should always carry a flash drive because you don't know when you have to install Windows

If you break the window in RyanAir, you'll be asked to pledge your kidney before deboarding the flight

One time on a plane the interior window was just resting behind the shade, so when I opened it it fell into my lap. I told the attendant and she basically told me to just put it back and it’s fine 😂

If I'm not mistaken, it is also used to protect people from touching the freezing outside window itself.
