5 Easy Ways to Help Someone in Chronic Pain

Follow these 5 simple steps to properly support your friends and family through chronic issues.

1. LISTEN FIRST. I can’t tell you how important that is.
2. Take the pressure off of yourself and help yourself be present by knowing that you do not have to have all of the answers.
3. Once they’re done getting their feelings off of their chest, help them focus on the positive.
4. Schedule something fun like shopping, going out for lunch, or just coming over, sitting on the bench, and shooting the sh*t.
5. LASTLY, connect them with any additional resources or people you might know. People don’t care what you know until they know how much you care.

BONUS: Don’t accidentally gaslight your friends and family. When they share something difficult with you, listen. They’re being vulnerable. You should be honored and just be there with them. Don’t compare their problems to yours or someone else who had it worse. “The starving children in Africa” never made your food taste any better or made it go any less to waste, so someone else’s problems will never make someone in front of you feel better - it will only make them feel worse for even speaking up, it will silence them, and it will distance them from you. None of us want that.

Thanks Doc. Wish me luck with ...I'm sharing this with my Son. I'm so tired of feeling like I gotta explain myself and 'Apologize' for everything. What I 'Do' and what I 'can't' do.
