Growing Up And Losing Friends

Director’s Commentary:
Hey guys, thanks for letting me know what you guys thought about the director’s commentary in the last video, since you guys liked it so much I’m going to keep at it with each video. Also, feedback is welcomed, it helps me get a feel for what part of the creation process you guys like to hear about and what I should focus on.

The Writing Process:
I was honestly never a great writer (I still am not), in school English was my worst subject, I didn’t start using commas in my writing until 11th grade, and I still have 0 idea what clauses are. But I think that in the last couple of months, I’ve been figuring out what makes good writing, good writing. It’s not about if your grammar is correct or if you’re using “big words”, none of that actually matters. Rappers and musicians twist words all the time, they sing and speak with wrong grammar, but for some reason it’s still beautiful. I think that this is because they are sharing things that other people aren’t willing to share, they are able to describe deeply personal feelings in a simple manner. Through words they can make people feel something. So, if I’m writing and I stop to think because I’m scared of putting a deeply personal thought down, that’s when I know I have a good sentence, I have to share that thought.

The Video Process:
So for about 2 days, I just played around with the quality of my video, intentionally making the footage look worse to make it feel more like a fuzzy memory. I highly encourage you to watch as many films, shows, YouTube videos, and art as you can (not passively but as a creator looking for inspiration), that way you have a library of content you can pull from whenever you are creating something.
Also, I’m back making stop motion animations. I’m not sure why I just watched this video, I just liked it a lot. I use my iPhone and a free app called Stop Motion Studio to shoot all my animations.

Improvements:
I actually liked this film quite a lot. But the one thing that I would really love to improve upon is my speed. I want to pump out more artwork at a faster pace because I feel that it can improve my artwork 10 fold. Not only that, but speed and deadlines will force me to remove all overthinking.
I’ve been obsessed with artists like Virgil Abloh and Van Gogh because of how much work they were able to put out in their short timespan. The only way they could have done that is by creating everyday and by doing, not overthinking and over analyzing a piece of work they did. So starting this week, I’m going to do my best to post weekly content, weekly pieces of art. 2-5 minute vlogs with the occasional 15-20 minute film to help develop myself as an artist.

People become friends because they enjoy each other's company. That usually means they are similar enough to understand each other, but also different enough to be interesting to each other. If any of those things isn't true anymore for either of those people, simply because people change, that doesn't make either of those people a bad person or a bad friend. It just means they are not as compatible as they used to be. That is nobody's fault.

People change and so do friendships.

Ugh dude this whole series is so beautiful. The careful choice of wording, the impeccable editing, the B-roll, all of it. You inspire me so much, keep up the amazing work!

I rmb the early 20s to be a sequence of chaotic turmoil. Everyone's trying to figure out who they are and where they belong. So many possibilities, followed by yet so many opportunity costs. Fact that you're still able to create through this turmoil is a solid sign that you're driven by love. I know now that feeling alone through this is a sign that you're quite ahead of the pack.

it doesn't make you a bad person to neglect people who make you not feel like friends with. as long as you just treat them with respect and enough self respect like everyone else. friendship is a philosophy, everyone has different rules for them. imo the best one is to expect nothing. because then you have to gain everything. love you my dude

Yeah, early 20's do be like that. You try holding onto some relationships but you realize neither of you are benefiting from it.
Great work with the colour-fringing retro look!

This was beautiful, it made me think of all my friendships, all my mistakes, I'm glad I forced some people to spill their thoughts and annoyances towards me, before it became too much for them and before it overflooded everything they thought of me. It worries me a lot whether I'm a good listener or not, I really want to be a good listener. I loved reading your director's commentary, about what you said in the writing process, it took me a long time to realize what you realized but yes, big words and grammar don't mean much, not unless it's intentionally part of what you're saying, otherwise, just true words are more than enough. I also admire that you're aspiring to go for more content even if it's shorter, I am excited for your weekly stuff to be honest. I don't think I can possibly _not_ overthink the work I do or videos I make, I feel like it will always be a slow process for me and I've decided to accept that. But maybe one day I'll try what you're trying :)

Ryan you've done it again. Firstly, this has one of the most beautiful aesthetics I have ever seen. The writing, coloring, editing, music; all of it works perfectly and SCREAMS "Ryan". But the best part about it is how you were able to express yourself in a way that feels so genuine. You've mastered this skill. From watching all of your videos, I feel like I know you. I'm so excited for the weekly content that's coming, but please don't put too much pressure on yourself. Also, you have inspired me to pursue YouTube this year, so thank you <3

pov: you childhood best friend told you she didn't want to be in your life anymore 2 days after graduation, and 6 months later you think about her and how she impacted your life (the first time you've had thoughts about her in a few months) and a few hours later you see this video. friend break ups are one of the hardest things, especially when you are told that you are a villain not worth saving.

As a 32-year old that had lost many friends, let me tell you that fake friends are worse than self-destructive vices. Those who avoid you during hard times, they don't give a shit about you, but what they can get from you. For years I wasted a lot of time hanging out with an addicting group of friends that eventually thought I had very serious issues. They eventually turned their back on me and I felt like shit. But then, I met many strangers and a lot of people that genuinely liked who I was. Then I came to realize that I wasn't the one with very serious issues, my old group of friends was toxic as hell. I did have some issues, of course; but they weren't as bad as they painted the picture. Whenever you lose friends, it's always for the best in the long run.

Thanks Ryan! Your videos are very inspiring and I've been enjoying binge watching them today.
