Glad someone posted about the unreliability of modern refrigerant/oil leak detection. I've owned several refrigerant sniffers with little success hoping that the price tag would compensate success rate. Best method personally has been with compressed-air (used to buy nitrogen tanks but ambient air is 70% nitrogen) and soap. Most of these repairs had been where customer was defeated, while the vehicle passed around by specialists/mechanics/parts changers. Highest difficulty to find when the refrigerant oil smothers a pinhole leak and doesn't leak until the vehicle is running. Time and patience.

Starting at $380!! Just immerse you car in water and look for the bubbles. ;)

Scotty, my friend, my car's AC went bad 3 days ago. Your timing is impecable! :)

Please don't use compressed air to pressurize an a/c system. It contains moisture that you do not want introduced into the system. Also air can become explosively reactive with the oil in a sealed refrigeration system. Use dry nitrogen for leak testing. Or a small "tracer" amount of refrigerant and nitrogen to detect leaks with a leak checker. EPA rules say it's ok to vent the small amount of freon and nitrogen mix when done. Licensed HVAC tech with 20+ years of experience. Good video on the ultrasonic. They are another good tool to have in your box for troubleshooting leaky systems

last year, I had to add a 12 oz can once a month to my Dodge Caravan. Last March I recharged it again, it was nearly empty after not being used over the winter. This time I added 2 ounces of PAG oil in the mix. I don't understand how that made a difference, but here it is nearly six months later, and it hasn't lost an ounce, it's still blowing ice cold from the charge I did early last spring.

Great Vid Scotty, very ingenious way of finding a leak! Im guessing the Customer is going to pass on the Evaporator replacement.

Thanks, it's just that I haven't changed them since late 2012, but they are still on the max and still look fine, especially the power steering fluid.

Welsh vegetable farmers usually have lots of leeks in their trucks -- and I had a leak about 10 mins ago, drinking too much coffee.

Nice. I can hear that sound when i start the AC in my cabin with no microphone. So, is the evaporator, or i have to check all the line AC?

I have the Equalizer ultrasonic water leak detector, to help with finding water leaks on I never considered it for A/C leaks maybe I will give it a try and see what I come up with. I'd recommend against using compressed air to find A/C leaks though, dry compressed nitrogen is the way to go.... Compressed air introduces water and oxygen to the system... I'm not sure if I am remembering right, but the oxygen is a safety issue and the water will require longer vacuum times to boil it out.

Scotty I have the infamous 2011Chevy equinox, going to look for an AC leak this weekend on it, I hope that it rolls over like an old hound and shows me it’s belly!!

Scotty thanks !Recently had our 2K7 Toyo Camry, 3.5L V6 with dual zone AC, checked and doubled confirmed to have an evaporator leak. Argh!! - just doesn't say enough. With scheduled upcoming maintenance and this new estimate its hitting the $3500 range for an almost 10 year old car with almost 90K miles. So we are in debate mode.  You always have great Videos Bruddah !!  Keep it Rocking.  Rick, in Hawaii - where AC is for real....
