Imagine if Heath Ledger's still alive Queen's Gambit would be more epic than this.

I think the actress Isla Johnston, who played the young Beth Harmon, deserves special mention for her portrayal of the unusual inward psychology of the young Chess master. She set the stage perfectly for Anya Taylor-Joy to play a fascinating character.

THE COOLEST THING YOU MISSED: In the car crash, she is dressed as a white pawn. In the final scene, she is dressed as a white queen. A pawn can turn into a queen by reaching the final line on the board. How many squares does it take? SEVEN. How many episodes does the show have?

I think in the final scene, Beth’s walk in the park takes her back to her chess beginnings when she meets all the Mr. scheibels’ of Russia as her way of honouring him as her initial chess mentor.

She also dressed like a white queen piece at the end.

Beth was legally adopted so she didn't have a "pseudo-mother." She had a mother.

More like "25 Things You Missed In THE MAKING OF Queen's Gambit". How are we supposed to "miss" something that wasn't hinted at in the show.

Most of these aren't even things you might have missed in the show. It's just junk from interviews and behind the scenes. I'll save you 15 minutes for the things that are actually in the show:

1. Benny plays with his ring a lot.
2. The chess boards have actual chess game setups on them (Whoah, who would have guessed?)
3. The teacher messes up a math problem on the chalkboard (shown multiple times in the intro to this video).
4. Beth wears a lot of clothing with lines on it, like a chess board.
5. Beth's lipstick changes as she gets older and is similar to the shade Alma wore.

Five things. There you go. 👎

At no time did I, or anyone else I personally know, think Harmon was EVER considering the idea of staying in Moscow, much less defecting to the USSR. If anything, we had thought the Russian champion might try to defect, possibly through Beth.
As for the ending, beth had noted the older park players and thought of Mr. Shaibel and how they only played for the love of the game and to pass the time.
She knew she'd be going back past the park on her way to the airport and demanded the stop to play a "last game" with another Mr. Shaibel, something she was unable to do with THE Mr. Shaibel, not to bask in her chess victory and fame, but to curl up in her winning a "normalcy" that had eluded her so many years.
And THAT'S why, I think, so many people have cried at that scene.

Shw nailed that role. That stare that she gives is so intimidating yet so feminine and beautifull

Love 'Queens Gambit' and dive into it but have REAL issue with ScreenRant calling her adoptive mom a "pseudo mom". Ask anyone who has been adopted or adopted another and how they feel about the 'pseudo mom' comment. Her adoptive mom in the few years of Beth's life was more of a mom than her bio mom was. Her adoptive mom has her flaws but embraced Beth's talent and helped her daughter maximize it and enjoy life. They had both been dealt crappy hands...abandoned by those who loved them, but found family in each other.

You know what else you missed? Almost all characters were played by British actors. Beth, young orphan Beth, Beth's biological mom, Mr. Fergusson (orphanage orderly), Beth's adoptive dad, Townes, Beltik, Benny Watts, French model Cleo, Georgi Girev (13-yr old Soviet prodigy) - they're all played by Brits.

Anya Taylor Joy was always made for it.

I was waiting for the mention of the fact that the actor who played Borkov wasn't actually Russian! He's a quite famous Polish actor and I think he should get credit for learning Russian for the part, Russian is a difficult language, and different from Polish (saying that they are similar is just like saying Italian and Spanish are similar plus different alphabet)

My grandmother grew up in an orphanage in KY. She had to take "vitamins" every morning

One you missed is the two piano pieces Alma plays in her house, are composed by Erik Satie, who also died from drinking caused illness

The last thing Beth's mother said to her before the crash was ' close your eyes' .
In the final game with Borgof there is that moment after looking upwards to the ceiling that she lowers her head and closes her eyes...
thought that was cool.
