Just my two cents here. Being a medical doctor I can explain it in the following ways. I'll jump straight to the part where the developed testes (the male gonad which produces sperm) start descending to their final position. The transabdominal phase of testicular descent consists of the movement of the testes from their starting position on the "posterior abdominal wall adjacent to the kidney" down to the internal inguinal ring. And then from there it descends furhter down to the scrotum where it lies for the rest of a man's life. And if someone's wondering where kidney lies, it's at the costovertebral angle that is at the point where ribs attach to the spine (backbone) so testes lie adjacent (next) to the kidneys initially and then moves downwards.

How do you argue with someone who claims that it doesn't really mean what it says?

A Pakistani scholar, Moiz Amjad, explained this verse beautifully. Firstly, he said that he consulted experts in the field and they confirmed that the verse was biologically accurate. More importantly, he said that "between the backbone and the ribs" is actually a euphemism for the male genitals.

The way this works is that you imagine looking at an anatomical model of man, from the sagittal plane, and drawing a semi-circle starting at rib level of his torso and around the genital area up to the backbone. It is similar to the idiom that describes a mature and intelligent person as having a "sound head on his shoulders" even though we know that the head is not directly attached to the shoulders.

This appears like the most accurate interpretation because it fits the context perfectly. The Surah addresses the skepticism expressed by the Pagans about people being brought back to life for a day of accountability in the hereafter. Thus, the Qur'an counters their skepticism by reminding them of their humble origins. Firstly, it states that if God can create such splendid beings from a despicable fluid ejaculated out of another's excretory organ, then why should He struggle to recreate them after they are dust and bones? Also, since we have such humble origins, we ought to have some humility before questioning the capability of such a Wise Creator.

Actually, the lower backbone is where the testis is made in the embryo.
Later on, the testis drops down.
And the word solb in Arabic means the lower backbone I.e. the lumbar and coxygeal regions of the vertebral column.

I was always confused by these ayats. But now it makes perfect sense.
Man created from fluid ejected.
He emerged from between the backbone and the rib cage.

Of course the Quran will not say he emerged from the “VJJ”.

Follow the order of the verses - it is easy to observe that the conception, birth, resurrection, and judgement of the human in its journey is mentioned in respective order:

At-Tariq 86:5-9
(5) Now let man but think from what he is created!
(6) Is created from a liquid ejected-
(7) Exits from between the backbone and the ribs:
(8) Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!
(9) The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,

The scholars have given their opinions and never claimed infallibility.
There is no disrespect in accepting the obvious.
May Allah swt have mercy upon our scholars.

To me as a physician, this verse actually solidified my faith. Embryologically correct in a way no body for hundreds of years after the Quran could explain, and God I hated embryology back in college, and it baffles me how our professor did not link it to the Quran it would have engaged so many of us in a subject that is so dry and complex.
Allah says he will show us his signs within ourselves. It can't get any truer than this.

This argument was refuted long ago, you can in fact check out a good explanation if you search “‘Scientific errors’ in the Quran Refuted” by Muhammed Hijab.
He made a long video and refuted all these ignorant claims, and one part of the video targets this claim in particular.

You can navigate in the video through the video descriptions as he added timestamps.

It's quite fascinating, you know, how things align sometimes. In the Quran, there's this verse about the backbone and such, and it's found in a chapter called Tariq. What's intriguing is that this chapter begins with an incredibly precise description of a particular type of star. It's rather ironic that while some parts are criticized for non-scientific information about human development, it also contains this awe-inspiring description of a star that would be incredibly hard to guess or know.

Religious people will do anything to save their outdated beliefs while science always admits when it is wrong and moves on to find the correct answer. This is why science will always be more humble than religion will ever be.

86:5-7
If we read it carefully, it not talking about sperm, it's actually talking about Man (baby) emerging between ribs and backbone.
