Understanding Glucose Intolerance: Dr. Ben Bikman on Hidden Influences

Dr. Ben Bikman answers a question from Michael about glucose intolerance. He explains that it is possible to have glucose intolerance even if all other metabolic biomarkers like insulin, uric acid, and triglycerides are normal. Ben defines glucose tolerance through a glucose challenge or tolerance test, and highlights how various factors such as protein intake, caffeine consumption, and sleep quality can influence glucose tolerance acutely.

My experience after losing 216 pounds and 26 inches off my waist at 59 years old four years ago after a lifetime of being ultra morally, obese.

I am pure carnivore doing the lion variation and eating only once a day six days a week, I am not worried about having a high blood glucose level. This is resulting in my body repairing itself, and giving me full male functionality at my age. Including a full set of dark hair on my head, muscle tone, marathon running abilities. All of this without medical intervention surgery.

For the first time in my life, I can go to any store to buy clothes, I can go to restaurants and fit in booths, and now I enjoy riding in airplanes as my excess skin disappears and everything is firmer and tighter. My goal is to one day, for the first time ever to without my shirt on at the beach without stares from people.

I've found that when I eat more protein, my blood glucose the next day will be higher, both in the morning and later in the day. It's normally around 105, but will go up to around 115 if I eat more protein the day before.

Thank you. I have been told I am pre-diabetic. I am not - I drink coffee, my sleep isnt great, and I am full carnivore. I do blood glucose testing at home daily and ALWAYS get normal readings. Sometime the lowest on the chart.

I wish you would do a video explaining why we get calcium deposits in our tissues and joints and what we can do about it. Thanks

In one of your videos, you said if a person fasts for say 16 hours and doesn't have much ketones that means their insulin is high. I used to have high ketones, but have been on keto for about 5 years, now I often just have .5 ketones even after 18 hours of fasting. I have read that our bodies get good at using ketones and that can cause them to be low. Could you comment on long term Keto?

I don't get it, Doctor Bikman: How does insulin spiking after eating too much protein works and why does it drop afterwards and cause fatigue, tiredness till one falls asleep?
Is it hypoglycemia kind of? And what to do against it if it happens?

I normally eat 70-100g protein daily, 2 meals, and I am active. But if I eat more than 50g of protein, I feel energised for 20-60 minutes and then I fall asleep and even after I sleep an hour I am still tired. It happened to me when I ate carbs and sugar, then I just had to drink smth sweet like coke or sugary coffee, and I was awake again. But what do I do now on ketovore? I am trying to stay under 50 grams of protein per meal. But still, sometimes it just happens, and I don't understand why is it and how to correct it. I mean, come on, it's only 57g of protein, and it knocks me down?? 💪👊

OK, Carnivore diet over 3 months, Keto for 6 months prior. I have bad diabetes. Test today shows an A1C of 7.5, with a c- peptide of 5.8. Basically 6 eggs, bacon, rib eye, pork steak, chicken thighs, hamburger meat, breakfast sausage, occasional fish. I generally fast 14–20 hours per day, once a month a 72-90 hour fast. That's it. I just don't get it. I'm not giving up, but really starting to feel hopeless. I have lost 50 lbs since last October.

My mother in law has been following the Keto diet with me and wife. She just had blood tests done and was informed by her doctor her HDL is up to 248. That’s an increase of 180 points since last November. I haven’t found much information on You Tube to explain why this has happened to her and of course she’s concerned and wonders if the Keto diet is to blame. Any thoughts?

I become more insulin sensitive when I eat low carb than, when I eat keto style. It is almost as if my insulin gets to actually do what it is intended to do? Or is this wrong?

I am " skinny" with high cholesterol and pre diabetes this is a metabolic problem and it took a long time for the Drs to take it seriously because I am skinny and in " shape" I did ballet, still eat well but I suffer CPTSD which really stressed most organs in the long run. I tried berberine and Tri chromium I got DEPRESSED as hell, definitely will not try metformin, I read people get depressed too. I'll try a radical, clean diet, no sugar, Mediterranean, high fat. So far my research. I do not trust the medical system nor " the Internet with " supplements " they even say that " barberine" helped with depression. Disgusting.

Can you explain to us reactive hypoglycemia following a glucose tolerance challenge. This happened to me at the 2 hr mark with a blood glucose of 42. I thought/felt like I was going die.

I wonder how histamine intolerant person can do carnivore. I really struggle with that. I want do carnivore but I notice histamine issues. I feel I'm trapped and doomed to eat plants. 😢

Dear professor dr. Ben Bikman, I am your fan from Taboão da Serra/Brasil, a quick question about glycated hemoglobin Hb1Ac not only as a secondary indicator of insulin level, but, in itself, how much harm can these anomalous hemoglobins cause to our body? Thanks in advance, cheers.
