2. Connect what you're reading with something you're already interested in
2.5 Find a good spot for focused reading
3. Preview chapter headings, table of contents, key words
4. Skim, or pseudo-skim - read important paragraphs
5. Take time to do something with what you read

I've been reading books my whole life, but I prefer to read slowly, so that I can fully grasp the concept of what I'm reading. I feel that reading quickly often makes me miss important themes within the books I read.

I always read two books at the 'same' time, one non-fiction and the other is a fiction. So, if i get bored with the non-fiction i'll just read the other one. Well, it helps.

For me, Goodreads is just a way to track my reading, set reading goals (this year I want to read 75 books) and write rambling reviews of my favorite books. And my bookshelf is less a trophy stand and more a reminder of why I love reading- because it holds all my favourites.

Everyone says reading is a skill... I can see your point, but my family never reads, and I read everyday. Somehow, they all read way faster than me. lol I'm a snail.

A) Read: often, widely, challenging material to build the skill. ~0:34
B) work against daydreaming, make interest links, choose a good physical space to focus ~1:35
C) pre read textbooks (bold, headings, first and last sentences of paragraphs) then...
D) skim or pseudo skim 2:38
E) LEARNING> reading [faster]
Wisdom> comprehension
Read then do something with that info 4:25 ish

I have pretty severe dyslexia, so for me reading is something that I can do, but that I cannot do it very quickly or without at least some difficulty. While I often challenge myself to read text, I find that audio books allow me to enjoy a medium that would otherwise cause me frustration and anxiety. I am a university student, and have developed a system where I get all my textbooks as e-books, copy and past the text for each chapter into a text-to-speech program and convert them into audio files. Doing this allows me to not only keep up with class to class readings, but absorb and enjoy the textbook rather then dreading it and resenting myself for a disability that I was born with. I think its always important to try to improve your skills, especially in the things you find most difficult... but I think its also important to try different approaches and seek solutions outside of the box when the box wasn't designed for you

I really hope you read this. Your work got me through my BA, my Master and now that I am doing my PHD, I am still watching your videos. You've been with me all these years and taught me nothing is impossible if you have a SYSTEM. Thank you so much, let me know if you need someone to translate your content in Italian, so that it reaches more poeple. Love and support from Italy

And I'm posting this for my students: the "pre-reading" concept is absolutely essential; I've done that all my life.

PS: I really like the term "interest link".

I definitely think you can naturally improve at reading by doing it more, but I have found recently that reading slowly is actually much more enjoyable. I take so much more from a book when I just slow down and really take in the words on the page whether I’m reading fiction or nonfiction.

When I read I always have with me a notebook and a pen, and while I'm reading if I find something that I consider important just pause and take notes + personal knowledge related with the topic.

Awesome tips. I tried a speed reading program a while ago, and pretty much they advised the same message: 1) Read for ideas rather than just words; 2)skim when necessary; and 3)expose yourself to different material. Subvocalization is usually not the problem, typically it's regression. However, regression is easily solved with a pointer to keep your eyes moving forward, as our eyes naturally are attracted to motion.

I completely agree with your last point. It's not a numbers game. The goal is to use what you've learned.
