Just because you get 5V out doesn't mean the port still works. The TVS primarily protect the data lines as they are generally much more sensitive (often a direct connection to the PCH or SoC).
Since those killers typically inject into the data lines checking the 5V supply will not tell you that much.

Put in Circuit Protection on the USB ports but puts 24/48v Backlight voltage line next to a 3.3v data line that goes directly to the cpu without a ground in between :D
Apple engineering at its best

If I’m correct, they’ve removed it in newer models..

in my very first computer, a commodore 64, all ports were supported by socketed cheap little chips. I fried the parallel port about 5 times. Bought a replacement chip. All was good without soldering.
Today, most computers external ports are directly connected to some expensive parts and nothing is socketed.

That looks like a tvs diode, normally it protects the circuit against cases like this but in this case the tvs blew up so it could save the circuit

it's a literal industry standard input channels (ALL OF THEM) that are in some manner surge-protected. You'd have to slam 120/240 down it but the same will happen

The parts needed for this protection are so cheap and easy to do. There is no excuse for this to not be in more devices.

That little IC contains protection diodes which is exactly for this kind of situations.

This an old feature of Mac's. I was actually gonna be surprised if it killed it.

except Apple will scrap the laptop and make you buy a new one if this happens, and this happens with random spurious events like someone sneezes near it.

Apple did something right and put protection in ... how much would it cost to fix at an Apple shop though ?

Of course its an older macbook. Nowadays apple wont do such a mistake and makes everything unrepairable

What kind of sick person creates a USB device to blow up USB ports and potentially the system they are attached to?

So, 5 volts and it works? What about the data pins?
