OMG! An inexpensive Berkey Filter with handles! You are a genius!

For pond or river water: Pre filter with an old t shirt then filter the water and then boil for 5 to 10 minutes.

Great job HC, I've got one little tip for the good people out here, buy some food grade silicone grease ( $1 for a 1/2 oz container at my local hardware store) and coat the rubber gaskets on the filter and spout, a little goes a long way. This prevents leaks and helps the gaskets to remain supple and reusable.🙂

I know the berkey filters say to put food coloring in the top tank when you first install new filters to make sure it isn't leaking. The water at the bottom should be clear. A great way to make sure you don't have any contaminated water leaking into the bottom chamber.

Girlfriend, I was just thinking about doing this myself! I want a Berkey but just can't afford it right now. Thanks for doing the research and sharing!

Just a tip for drilling into stainless. Go SLOW and apply a good amount of pressure. If you go too fast it overheats your bit and ruins it. Also if using a step drill, drill the final step from the opposite side to help de-bur the hole.

I love that you give us an alternative to the expensive Berkeys and others....this awesome!

I’ve watched several videos on how to make a DIY water filter. This by far is the easiest, and it looks just dandy, the stainless steel makes it stand out as some thing a little bit more pleasing than a plastic bucket. And it’s cheaper! Thank you

This works well. We put city tap water through our ceramic filter, and the filter does collect a brown layer after a while. You can carefully wipe that off with a soft cloth, but it will eventually need replacing. This shows how murky even supposedly-clean tap water can be.

This has got to be one of the most practical do it yourself I have seen in a long time. Great job!

I like the stainless steel pots a whole bunch better than buckets, which I had planned to do!
Just a note - Please make sure you have plenty of filters on hand as well as a spigot or two with the rubber washers as you could break one and then have nothing. With shipping problems out there, you don't want to be without. Thanks for sharing Jinne! Perfect timing 👌

I put one of these together about a year ago. I had such a hard time finding 16qt stock pots that were not part of a set. Walmart no longer sells the 16qt individually and the 16 is necessary to accommodate the black Berkey filters. So I ended up with a set of pots from Harbor freight and I used a turkey fryer vessel for the bottom tank since I got a good deal on it and it already has a spout installed.

I found this tip in the comments of another similar bucket filtration system and thought it might be useful to anyone who is having a slow rate of filtration: "I would like to bring an engineering problem to your attention that will fix flow rate and also the filtration rate. The bottom container when starting has only air in it. As it fills with water, the air is pushed upwards and has only one area to escape from, and that is back through the two water filters. The filters are not able to displace the air in proportion to the water flow out of them, and this causes the filters to slow down, and eventually stop. What needs to be done is another hole needs to be put in the system, and a food-grade safe ventilation tube needs to be installed. It would need to have a threaded system similar to the filters, and a clear tube that would reach about 1 1/2" short of the top of the water chamber when filled. This will allow air to vent from the bottom chamber receiving water to the top chamber losing water, which would regulate it. Your filtration rate would increase to its maximum capacity, and the dispensing rate would be equalized by the infusion of air from the top, preventing vapor lock." Again, if anyone has this type of problem, hopefully, this modification will help....

Well it looks like you sold out Amazon on the ceramic domes. They promise to be back in stock soon. I went to Walmart got my pots, ordered the parts from Amazon and I already have the drill! Wouldn't it be great if the people in Flint Michigan that have notoriously bad water were able to share this video? I wonder who could coordinate. Maybe people could gift a kit to churches and the church folks could put them together and hand them out around the upcoming holidays. 🙏🙏

This is a great idea. The stainless steel looks so much better sitting on the counter than plastic buckets. Thanks for showing us how to do this.

Thanks for making this video! I'm a single mom and I can't afford a Berkey water filter system. So now I just need to get a ceramic filter, a spicot, 2 buckets, and a drill bit. Thanks soooo much! This is going to save me a few hundred dollars!!!!😁😍😁😍😁😍

THANK YOU sooo much!! I will be making this wonderful Berkey knockoff this weekend . You have saved a lot of preppers hundreds of dollars that we can put elsewhere for the future. You are a lifesaver. The only thing I will add to this unit will be a terracotta saucer upside down underneath to boost off the counter. Just put hot glue around the rims(top and bottom)of the saucer, to stop shifting and sliding on counter.
