Water Filters- One of the Most Important Things You Can Own!
I think water filters are really important. No matter which one you choose, you should own a water filter and keep one in your rig or bug out bag at all times.

There’s so much to learn and consider before choosing the RV life on the road

Good idea to pre filter the water going into the bag with cheese cloth or the like. Keeps the really big debris from going into the filter.

Re: the black carbon, that's activated charcoal, and it's what they give you in the ER to deal with poisoning. Not only is it safe, it's actually good for you.

Be careful not to let the filter freeze, as it will be ruined. I left mine in a shed between trips and it must have frozen - next time I went out there was zero flow. Luckily I had enough gas to boil water instead. That was an expensive mistake!

Backpacking thru hikers mostly take the Sawyer Squeeze (around $30), not to be confused with sawyer mini or micro.

Back-flushing the hollow reed filters should be done every other use for it to last. They clog fairly easily and ALWAYS have to be protected from freezing temperatures or they will FAIL. 🌿💦

The problem with the straws is what if you want water for cooking, freeze dried food, etc.

This is a very important subject that most people do not ever think about and I'm glad you addressed it.

You should get some test kits to see how well they are filtering out the things that can harm you.

MSR makes awesome things. I've had an MSR Miniworks water filter for 22 years now. Love it! It's absolutely bomb proof.

Backflush only with trusted water. Pre-filter water from a stream with a cloth and place open end of container downstream when capturing water.

If I'm not mistaken Lifestraw has a setup where you can filter water into containers, but I could be wrong. The Gravity Filter looks really nice even if it is a little pricey. Keep the good stuff coming Bob.

Putting a water purification tablet in the filtered water would be a good idea. Best to use flowing water to fill the bag if possible. And having the bag in the sunlight is good to. Some nasty viruses are killed by uv light.

If you're really concerned, get a desalinator. The price goes up 10x, but nothing larger than an NaCl molecule can get through it. No viruses, prions, amoeba, bacteria, minerals, nothing. You actually want to add a little minerals back because otherwise the water can be so pure that it's not good for you. You also need to be careful not to use water with petrochemicals, or too much sludge in it. Prefilters are important.
