I am a water treatment plant operator. I can't speak for Berkey, but I have an Alexapure pro water filter and I am very happy with it. You have to use a little common sense when it come to these filters. The dirtier the water you're filtering, the more often you need to change your filters. When it starts filtering slower, your filter is getting clogged up and needs to be changed. If you had no other water source, I'd boil your water after filtering it if you're still concerned about bacteria, etc.I'd much rather have one of these than nothing at all when the shtf.

With all the facts you have presented, in an SHTF situation, I would much rather rely on a gravity filter versus no filter.

JUST TESTED MY BERKEY WITH THE FLUORIDE FILTERS.
GUESS WHAT? NO FLUORIDE. IT WORKS. I LOVE IT.

It's an unsettled lawsuit. There's a guy from CA suing Texas Pete hot sauce right now because it's actually made in NC instead of TX! Anyone can sue anybody for any reason. I'll wait until a judgement has been reached b4 trashing a company.

We love ours. Can’t drink regular tap water. Smells like a swimming pool. I will stop recommending it to friends but I’m not trading it yet. Thanks for your research.

How worried should a fella be that filters aren't certified by standards set by the government that a prepper is prepping himself to defend his life from possibly?

Been using a Big Berkey with ceramic filters for years, love it! It depends on how dirty the water is to start with as to how much usage a filter can be effective. Sure beats nasty bacteria and chlorine.

I have a Pro Pur gravity fed filter that has been in use for years. We are on a well and I can say that it tastes putrid unfiltered. After the filtration it tastes pure and delicious and clean. I cannot attest to the scientific data of the water. I just know it tastes far better.

I have had a Berkey since 2014 i am only concerened about Chlorine and Flouride i test for this every 6 months and it works in both of these situations so i am good with continuing to use my berkey.

I did a video about two weeks ago on it. You can get a complete water sample analysis for around $25. I did one before and after the Berkey. I’m waiting on the results now until I see data I don’t care about popular opinion. I’ll send you the data when I get it

Why is Berkey filters closing?
The EPA has not utilized this new re-interpretation to stop the sale of any other outdoor water filter, just Berkey® alone. We have been informed that the real issue is that because of Covid-19, the EPA does not like the fact that Berkey® filters are capable of removing virus from your water.Dec 19, 2023

We use an Alexapure unit here.
As some mentioned below, I think the longevity of the filter is contingent upon the kind of water that is inputted.
If you are putting pre-treated tap water directly into the unit, it works far better and far LONGER than dumping unstrained, , greenish, creek or lake water in it... or water collected from questionable sources.
I think a lot depends on how OFTEN folks will disassemble the unit and CLEAN said filter! We do it religiously every 2 weeks here.
We wipe it down and get the residue buildup off of the filter wall, and I bought a cheap rubber primer piece from Berkey, and it unclogs the filter when it begins running noticeably slower.
So all that said? We use only 1 filter in the unit... we have 13 animals and 4 adults that consume the water from the Alexapure, which I recently changed after 1 FULL YEAR when the water started tasting less purified.
So....
How many gallons in a year have gone through that filter?
have NO clue! lol
A LOT! WAY more than 200 but most likely less than the 5000 Alexapure advertises.
MD's correct.... these gravity fed units DO have their quirks and drawbacks. And ya gotta stay on top the filter cleaning for logevity. Wise to do anyway, as they don't exactly GIVE these filters away!
But I'm happy with this Alexapure unit.

I use ProPure water filters only, their Filters are tested and certified by 3rd Party labs, they do NOT test their own Filters. lot's of people I know use ProPure Filters in their Berkey systems. To get Flouride out of your water Berkey wants you to pay extra for their better filters NOT the Filters they send out with their systems. It doesn't really matter how fast it is what matters is WHAT it takes out. The faster the system the less pure the water. I just looked at a new ProPur ProOne 9" Ceramic Filter and on it it states Certified by NSF International.

You can run the Daulton ceramic filter in your Berkey. They are NSF certified

We bought ours for SHTF to filter rain water and pool water
I think that everything you have said aside
I feel like it would be an asset in a bad situation
But I don’t plant on dipping from a pond or puddle
It’s just one tool in our prep

For those who are claiming that the ProOne has NSF certification, the filters are ONLY certified for the materials used in the filter, not for the contaminant filtration abilities. Im not.for it or against it, just thought some out there may want to know.

I bought a counter top distiller rather than a new pair of ceramic candles and was amazed at the amount of junk that was left behind in the tank, and clearly not removed by the candle filters. The only thing the candles filter out is the chlorine smell by the internal activated carbon.
The distiller takes out everything even the fluoride.
Best tasting water I’ve had and is definitely recommend one as a replacement for a gravity fed filter.
