Nice Job. Quick Tip - If you are using pond or lake or just plain old dirty water with bits and pieces in it, put it through a cheese cloth or coffee filter first. It will make your Berkey style filters last longer.

Why I love country Boys they always come up with cheaper better alternatives to super expensive stuff

If you keep it disassembled, you can store the whole system, and nobody would have any idea that you posses something potentially more valuable than gold - especially if you keep the filters separate.

I’ve had the berkey for many years. I know a fair amount about it. This is an excellent vid that is very accurate and succinct. Good job. I subbed.

I was thinking about using a sand filter first just to remove sediment from any real dirty water, but the cleaner the source, the easier it is to filter. Useful video. I did not knot know that.

Thank you! I have just purchased everything to make my water system. I just needed simple instructions on how to build it. You are spot on, and a great instructor.

I have seen a few other 2 and 3 bucket filters but neither used the gamma lid. Also, I like screwing the filter to the bottom bucket lid of which I hadn't seen or thought of. Thanks for these tips. The gamma lid link doesn't work but an Amazon search dud. New subscriber too..

Just made room for this. Get it you won’t be sorry. Before November will be ideal.

I had to go with a larger size drill bit on the lid holes as my filter stems didn't want to go in easy and didn't want to force the plastic stim..could break you know..the large stem seals still sealed properly, no leaks..had to over size the spout hole too..same problem..
When drilling the 4 lid holes one might use 2 bolts to keep the lid from shifting..I only did a 2 filter unit but still used a bolt to keep lid in place when drilling..almost a must for a 4 hole top tho..
Great DIY vid for first timers like me..Thx...

Gravity filters are designed to remove certain pathogens from perfectly clear water such a mountain stream. If there is any silt in the water they will plug up and not allow water to flow through. You can scrub the cartridge, but soon you will reduce the thickness of the media and then it will not remove pathogens. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST PRE-FILTER THE WATER UNTIL IT IS PERFECTLY CLEAR. This can be done by a combination of settling, flocculation, sand filtering, and/or common cartridge type sediment filters that are easily available. If you don't believe this, take out all but one of your ceramic cartridges, plug the other holes, add some dirty water like what you will have to use during a crisis, see how long it takes to plug up your ceramic cartridge. You will ruin one cartridge but you will know the truth!

Another issue: if there is water in a ceramic cartridge, even a little, and that cartridge is allowed to freeze, a fine crack can occur that will allow pathogens through. You may not know it as you cannot see the crack. NEVER ALLOW YOU CARTRIDGES TO FREEZE!
