As someone with ADHD I can confirm we’re on the constant hunt for dopamine

I have ADHD and caffeine actually calms me down. Obviously in ridiculous doses it would get me cracked out but it’s crazy that I found this video! Makes so much sense.

Wasnt diagnosed till age 30. Absolutely had a drug problem. Seeing a psychiatrist and being properly medicated has changed my life for the better in so many ways. Im still bitter i went that long with people missing very obvious signs of severe adhd, and i would ask anyone who would listen for help, but because i got decent grades and didnt act out in class i was ignored. Working on that lingering resentment, but everything else is fantastic!

For everyone insinuating i didnt/don't have adhd because i did ok in school, that's EXACTLY why girls aren't diagnosed at the rate boys are. The loud and obvious "kid with adhd" symptoms largely present in boys, so no one even thinks to look out for the wildly different way adhd typically presents in girls. Girls suffer just as much, (if not more, because we don't get the support, validation, knowledge, and guidance we need from a young age. That sets you up for complete failure and several comorbidities as an adult!) only silenty, and is a HUGE reason most women don't get diagnosed till adulthood on their own accord after their lives have crumbled. Not seeing a symptom doesn't mean the symptoms isn't there, and not getting the help and guidance i needed has made my life 1000 times more difficult and upsetting than it would have been with earlier intervention. Please don't add to my already immense trauma of people dismissing me my entire life. Please look into adhd (specifically in girls and women) before you comment on it like you're a school counselor from the 90s.

Ive never been diagnosed with adhd but something ive learned about myself in my late 20s is that energy drinks dont give me energy, they mellow me out and allow me to think straight. Some days at work i cant lead my team because my brain is just all over the place. My thoughts are disorganized and getting that energy drink stops it. Its like trying to pick up papers in a room with thr window open and the wind is blowing so hard and thr papers are flying everywhere, then suddenly the window closes and everything is still and calm

If my anxiety is super bad, caffeine calms me down. I’m like the coolest, sweetest, nicest, funniest, patientest, most caring, most productive, smartest person when I drink a lot of caffeine.

I remember talking with my doctor about this when I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. My doctor explained that, aside from caffeine, other habits of mine (having to listen to certain music to focus, excessive pacing, etc) were also coping methods I had inadvertently learned to manage ADHD. I think its really interesting to see the ways which people subconsciously equalize issues in their lives, even as children

I agree 100% as a parent of a kid with ADHD. I also have employees adults with ADHD and I have seen that anything that makes someone “normal” whatever that means jittery and unfocused does opposite to someone on the spectrum. It makes him focused and calm.

That explains why my ADHD is more noticeable now. I’ve been trying to cut down my addiction to sweets and lose some belly fat. Generally all that’s doing is leaving me feeling meh and wanting to vegetate with zero energy or focus for the things I know I need to do.

My brother is 26. His entire life he was considered to be violent and easily agitated. He was diagnosed with ADHD. His entire life he couldn’t focus easily in class, or relax without the noise of a fan at night. Malls would make him anxious. At 26 he’s been diagnosed with tinnitus, which is ringing in the ears. He’s dealt with it his whole life, thinking it was normal. The ringing in his ears was the to blame for it all. We shouldn’t blame it on one thing so quickly. ADHD was a symptom of a bigger problem. If you heard loud ringing all day, you’d be a little impulsive too. Living like that can drive a person insane.

That's why Adderall was so dangerous for me. Life felt like a breeze. I was able to get everything done, I was able to communicate effectively and get my thoughts out without forgetting where I was going. Plus, I had energy ALL day long. But, my heart would have never been able to take it. If I would have continued to take it, I would have had a heart attack by 30. Thank God I was able to just deal with life the way I was designed to deal with it.

I've always wondered why I thought coffee calmed me down. Used to have stressful days and wouldn't be able to deal unless I had some coffee

As a child, my husband was given coffee before school to help him "behave" and focus because they noticed he seemed to be "calmer" and focused. He still relies on caffeine a lot as an adult to help with focus.

An Adderall prescription completely changed my work life... I don't over-think what to do, when to do it, and no longer get easily frustrated by distractions. I'm also more present in my daily life. It's incredible... I wish I had access to it a decade ago.
