Can't help but think of Ms Swift's new album, Midnights. First time hearing a singer mention both covert narcissism and machiavellianism. Good for raising awareness.

I have never been under the impression that those who possess dark triad traits are more successful interpersonally. It makes sense to me that they wouldn't be. I have always related those traits to financial and career success, and I think that's what comes to mind for most people. Like Ana, I also disagree with the notion that this puts people with dark triad traits at a disadvantage. If we measure their outcomes by our values, it looks disadvantageous. We do not have the career success they do because it is more important to us to have positive relationships with others, but we have to keep in mind that they don't care about that, at least not as much. The negative interpersonal outcomes are more than worth it to them if it leads to greater financial success.

My friend exhibits high narcissism and machiavellianism. It seems adaptive for him, but maladaptive for society. He gets what he wants regardless of how it affects others.

For example, we were talking about starting a tutoring business. Another company charges $100 per hour for this service.

My instinct is to charge $25 per hour until I build experience and feel comfortable charging a higher rate.

My friend’s instinct is to charge $500 per hour (!). He says that his time is valuable, and he gets paid that rate for other consulting jobs, so that’s what his time is worth. There’s no consideration for the students on the other end and whether he can actually help them (having zero teaching/tutoring experience).

It works for him - he gets paid well and has a successful career. But I’ve seen his success come at the expense of others.

Anyhow, I appreciate all the work you put into these videos!

I think that psychopathy being having the least success makes sense, because humans are driven by social interaction, even if they are introverted, and I think that although psychopathy may put on a front of fake confidence, people can feel when they are not being seen, or listened to. while the other triads may not place any value in others feelings, a part of manipulation is using what someone wants to feel, against them, something a lack of empathy struggles to provide.

I grew up with a very abuse father. When I first heard of the Dark Triad, I said, "Yes, yes, and yes, " when I applied the concept to him.
My father was quite successful in his working life. He was able to impress a lot of people.
His personal life was very different. I reached the point in therapy where I confronted him about the things he had done to me. By the time he died, most of the rest of the family -- none of whom had gone into therapy -- despised him. I had revealed years of sexual abuse and no one doubted me. It was more like, "Oh! He did that, too!" because they had seen and felt him being abusive in other ways so many times.
I have had to work hard on forgiving him, more for myself than him. It has left me feeling pity for him and his wasted life.

I love this video’s presentation and questions about a meta-analysis of studies about the Dark Triad personality traits. It’s a fascinating topic and the information is presented concisely, and with an appropriate degree of skepticism on the question of whether people with these traits suffer a net harm or enjoy a net gain.

99.9% of executives are dark triad in my opinion, I think they are succeeding just fine. I think, this study took large inspiration from the desire of promoting positive social behavior, instead of being honest that some of the aggressive behaviors and nonconformist activity may have benefits on and individual level, even if it may be or not be positive for society as a whole.

Narcissists' "openness to experience" makes sense, it explains their risky and "deviant" behavior and stems from the fact that narcissists and psychopaths are prone to boredom, they're dead inside. They don't experience normal, healthy and positive feelings like joy or love, so they have to do extreme things (abuse, rape, steal or kill) in order to feel alive. This also explains why so many psychopaths and narcissists are serial killers or serial rapists.

I'd be interested to hear an analysis of the differences between sociopathy and psychopathy. My current understanding is that psychopathy appears to have a stronger physiological component to it than sociopathy does. Psychopaths have a sympathetic nervous system that functions differently from what is typical in situations of stress or danger, enabling them to be calm and cool under pressure. Their heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate remain in the normal range even in stressful circumstances.

A second difference is that psychopaths tend to have greater capacity to control and modulate their behaviour - to be cunning, calculating, and strategic in their actions - whereas sociopaths tend to be more emotionally reactive, more emotionally dysregulated, and more behaviourally disinhibited.

A third difference is that adverse childhood events can be a causal factor in both sociopathy and psychopathy but tend to be more prominent in sociopathy, giving rise to the adage, "Psychopaths are born, not made."

I'm not sure if these three points are true.

my studies found that sociopathy is just a modern- social media type- word that is synonymous to psychopathy but commonly used online and in younger generations as a layman's term like how people throw around the term narcissism.

i became friends with someone over the last year who was very machiavellian- it's eerie hearing others describe the traits because she exhibited all of them. i ended up getting roped into the ever-present drama (something ive learned now to never do but to be fair it was kind of a minefield) and because i didn't help her deceive others she lies about me to anyone who will listen. we work in the same industry and she told our manager i slept with her boyfriend when she was the one who got caught cheating on him. i wasn't even the one who told him. it's been effective to just ignore it but i hate that if i see her out in public and she's with some of the superficial connections she's made since i'm going to get accused of something i would never do. sorry, but i'm on the side of stay away from people who lack morals or empathy because there's no telling what damage they'll end up doing.

i had the same thought about the three conditions being linked somehow. maybe same condition with different presentations based on intelligence or early life experiences?

Did you see Kanika Batra's channel? She's from Australia and is diagnosed sociopath. She went to therapy and is very self aware. I find her content very interesting.

It's a shame people don't discuss the Dark Triad more! Fictional characters I enjoy and whom I believe are dark triads or with many such traits:

Lala Salamanca - Better Call Saul
Walter White - Breaking bad
Boyd Crowder - Justified
Dutch Van Der Linde - Red Dead Series
Bane - The Dark Knight Rises
Cancer Man - The X-Files

Am I missing anyone? Any of these characters would make a great video! Except for Walter White being already covered.

yes, please do a video on the topic of sociopathy vs psychopathy ❤️ would love to see a topic like this being discussed here 🥰
and just a little suggestion
if you'd like, you could maybe explain how some of those characteristics could help one in life or like how to avoid psychopaths and how to deal with people who are narcissists ❤️

Adaptive for them at the expense for others, for sure.
