is 3ds Max going to Die?

3ds Max is one of the most known 3d software in a lot of industries such as feature film VFX, video game development and architectural visualization but it seems like there are people talking about the death of 3ds Max since Autodesk discontinued Softimage back in 2014. After Softimage was killed the image of Autodesk became worse among 3d artists and they started to wonder is 3ds Max next?

Many people are saying that there will be no problem because I will use blender, or c4d or Maya,

But the important thing is I believe that having more options for software in your hand is healthy for the industry ...

I love 3ds Max personally but I've started to learn Blender on the side it doesn't hurt.

I work as an artist in the oil and gas industry and 3Ds max is widely used because of its ease of integration with Autocad models, I find to do this kind of work in Maya very hard. That being said, I am not tied to any software or company, if they go away I'll move on to something else.
That being said I think many of the people hating and wanting 3Ds Max to die is because is way too expensive or are Blender fanbois

I have heard this more than 10 years. But, 3dsMax is still best selling DCC on earth. That tells something. Check who are the 3ds Max users, it is used for vfx, visualization, commercial, feature animation, illustration, medical animation concept art, game, VR, AR, motion graphics . You name it. None of DCC is as widely used as 3dsMax.

I think Autodesk will fuse these two softwares into '3DS MAYA' 🤔

I do archviz, I use 3dsMax only for that. It's feels old, abandoned, slow, uncomfortable compared to others. For example, the material editor is still on a separate window, it's really annoying. In the other hand I have Blender, I started using it a couple months ago, It's feels fresh, lightweight, quick, easy to work with. I even did some complex animations in eevee (realtime render engine). Amazing and powerfull. And the more important, it's fun to work with, that's inspiring and motivating. Also it's feels alive, with constant updates.

The mass exodus from Autodesk 3DS Max is not about the abilities of the program. The advanced features of other programs. It is because of the way Autodesk treats people using their products and their ridiculous Subscriptions. It is based on how they have treated people who have been using their software from inception. The value for what you get does not match the subscription pricing. Plus updates are not really updates as much as they make subscribers pay for bug fixes.

I'm in Arch Viz and NOTHING compares to 3DS Max.
You just can't do it any other way, and Arch Viz isn't going to die anytime soon so there will always be users for 3DS Max.

Also, as a hobby game designer, I find 3DS Max more much fun to use over Maya. I think Maya has potential, but it's so horribly glitchy and un-intuitive.

Actually, Arch Viz may be first where Max loses its ground. Just release fully-featured Corona for Blender + some asset converter - it's done, literally, for small and mid-sized arch-viz companies there is nothing Blender + fully-featured Corona couldn't do. Actually, if Cycles was just slightly better optimized for CPU + included post-processing tools similar to the ones that Corona has - that would be even bigger killer.

Theres something thats missing in this conversation. The fact that a vast amount of artists that exist with the 3ds max skills in game development and film industries. Sure its important to learn new software but its not practical to move to a completely new package often. Also as you mentioned 3ds max has the biggest plugin options out of all of the 3d packages. That basically makes it like an infinite package when comparing it to Blender or Maya. Dont like the basic set up of max? Im sure theres a plug in for that.

I use 3ds since it wasn't MAX yet (yes, it was a DOS version). And even though I have long history with it, I must say its a really shitty software these days. Unstable, buggy, patchwork of different plugins. Think about it - there are parts of code (curve editors), dating back to 3dsMax 1.2... in the 90s! There are also 5 or 6 totally different and incompatible node environments (material editor, particle and data systems, MCG). Its a joke, not modern software. Its only leverage is the compatibility with AutoCAD / Revit, and even this is not without any hickups.

I would argue there are massive issues with Maya LT(limited), that mean it's not really a worthy of comparison to other softwares.

It lacks almost all simulation systems, a rendering engine, and the ability to use add-ons. (That's right, you can't even use add-ons!)
I do quite like Maya's radial menus, and workflow, but that limited version is an insult.

I used blender 2.8x for archviz from 2019 and feel it fits very well

It's ridiculous, people have been saying 3dsmax is going to die for the last 2 decades, ever since Maya came out. 3dsmax has the biggest user base, it's going nowhere.

3dsmax earns way more money for autodesk than Maya .... they'll kill Maya first. All this 'Talk' is just that and nothing more. The entertainment industry is a small slice of the 3d software market, so even if AD totally pull out of entertainment they'll still keep still keep MAX and ditch Maya. Massive Corporations make decisions based on money, the end

I started with 3D Studio in 1995, jumped to Maya in 2001 and jumped to Blender in 2019.
I fill Autodesk don't care that much about their products because the are multi millionairs as hell and today they are putting all their attention into AI.

Max is literally the best software when it comes to basic modeling. Simple shift like selecting an edge using the move tool with shift held to auto extrude makes sense. Scaling and extruding at the same time. The damn modifier stack is king.

I feel like autodesk should come up with a new app that blends and streamlines the best parts of both 3ds max and maya. If you think about it, both maya and max are pretty old, so a new modern software that takes all of that into one package and makes it all easier to use would be nice. Blender is pretty much doing that, that's why it's so successful (plus it's price of course)

Price is ridiculous for small studios.
