I’ve talked a lot about the importance of magnesium. Here’s when not to take magnesium.

Today we’re going to talk about when not to take magnesium. The danger of taking too much magnesium is when the body can’t get rid of it. Typically there is a mechanism in the kidneys that can easily get rid of excess magnesium. But, there are certain conditions that can cause someone to be unable to get rid of magnesium.

A few symptoms of too much magnesium:
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Abdominal cramping
• Low blood pressure
• Depression
• Lethargy
• Difficulty breathing
• Irregular heartbeat
• Cardiac arrest

A few situations where you may not want to take large amounts of magnesium:
1. If you have kidney disease (chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, you’re on dialysis, or if you see low GFR on your kidney test)
2. If you have hypothyroidism
3. If you have Addison’s disease
4. If you’re taking certain medications like Fosamax, certain antibiotics, diuretics, or lithium

You are the first keto expert to talk about who should not take magnesium or potassium and why you should be careful with the amount you take. Thank you - well presented.

Magnesium is incredibly useful as a supplement, it can be used both to lower blood pressure, to sleep better and to have regular bowel movements.
Thank you for also telling us about the dangers

I used to take magnesium for years and I was so very tired all day long. I discovered that it lowered my blood pressure so much (I have low blood pressure anyway) I was sooo tired all the time, until I found that it was from taking magnesium..Anyone with high blood pressure should take it …I quit magnesium years ago and now have much more energy daily…Magnesium can be found in foods like pumpkin seeds, Pelegríno water, avocados …. 😘

Wow I didn’t know this. I have hypo thyroid in fact it’s bad, which I’m being treated for, but slow going.
I’ve been taking magnesium with this condition for years and no doctor has ever told me not to. Thanks

Notably not all Magnesiums are created equal. Magnesium oxide is a heavier elemental form with less bioavailability meaning more of it stays inside the gastrointestinal tract where it osmotically increases bulk and motility within the colon. The net result, especially long term, can be gastrointestinal-related side effects and impaired metabolism of other dietary elements.

For those who have a problem with it like my colleague had: "Significantly lowered serum magnesium levels have been observed in people who suffer from migraines and headache. A high dose (600 mg) of oral magnesium daily for 12 weeks significantly reduced the incidence of headaches by 41.6% of respondents, and also reduced the severity and duration of acute pain attacks."
From the book I recommend: A brief collection of unknown facts about vitamins and minerals "

It’s interesting that you say people shouldn’t take magnesium if they’re depressed, but magnesium glycinate helps with serotonin uptake, and this magnesium type helps with sleep quality. sleep quality can be the cause of depression.

Thank you Dr. Eric for this video. One month ago I went through a thyroidectomy, and for those who don't know, means that I'm in the group of people who suffer hypothyroidism, and I always was using magnesium to help me sleep but, since a week ago I was feeling a strange pain in the right kidney and I like to approach a solution before getting to the doctor. Then three days ago I saw this video and voila, at this moment, no pain since I stopped using magnesium. Thank you very much doc!!

A better video on Magnesium would be that there are 10 types and each affect your body differently. I.E., magnesium citrate is for constipation, and magnesium glyclinate is for brain, heart, and skeletal muscle health.

A quick note to add about magnesium supplementation. I began taking it in late January after realizing I was exhibiting several symptoms of deficiency ( muscle cramps, sleeplessness, trouble getting to sleep, heart palpitations). The dosage was once per day at 100 mg (a mixture of magnesium forms). And the effect was quite immediate especially for sleeping and the muscle cramps. I decided to go on a stronger regimen to build up my health in May, purchasing 200mg capsules of magnesium bisglycinate that I took once in the morning and once in the evening. Last week I stopped taking them -- and wanted to let others know that it is important to monitor your reactions to understand when you may have enough. The point here is to be careful with any supplements you may take as your body can be overwhelmed if it can't discharge it easily or use all that you are taking in.

For those that are complaining about him saying potassium instead of magnesium at 1 05, if you figured it out so will others. Let it go for gods sake, he's a Dr not a Saint. Matt

Need to fix that potassium slip, will confuse the heck out of people since they are both critical electrolytes.

This is one of the few times I’ve disagreed with Dr Berg. I’ve taken mag for years and I have hypothyroidism. The thing to remember is to not take it at the same time as thyroid medicine. I even researched it and I can’t find anything that says you shouldn’t take mag if you have hypothyroidism.
