I grew up in California and just always knew the kind of prices that existed there. When I moved out of California I couldn’t believe how cheaper things are in other places. I couldn’t see going back to California. So, don’t leave California if you think about coming back one day

I pay around 800$ a month for a house in a nice neighborhood and will never live in California.

The effects of the downturn are beginning to sink in. People are being impacted by the long-term decline in property prices and the housing market. I recently sold my house in the California area, and I want to invest my lump-sum profit in the stock market before prices start to rise again. Is now the right moment to buy or not?

I spoke to an older lady who bought a house in Claremont CA back in the 70's for around 60k and now is worth 1.2M. Prices here can be outrageous compared to other parts of the country. She sure did get a good investment though.

Me, a college student living in the south-west of France (aka Bordeaux):
+ 290€ For rent+water+electricity+wifi (yes I know it’s incredibly low compared to the average local price, although I have one roommate)
+ ~200€ for food
+ ~500€ for other expenses
+30€ public transportation card
+34€ private insurance
= around 1060€ in total

Marina, good reality check. The house I grew up in on the edge of Cupertino my parents bought for $17K in 1958 and now on Zillow is estimated at $2M. The house in Gilroy I bought in 2002 for $400K is now estimated at over $1M. With gas about $4.5 a gallon, I drive 80 miles round trip to and from Monterey every day at about spend about $60 each week on gas.

Paying rent, it’s such a waste of money. We purchased a house in 2005 and paid off our mortgage entirely after 16 years. Now living mortgage and rent free. (Only paying property tax once a year). During the years after we bought the house, rent fees increased very fast, but we had almost the same monthly mortgage payments. After a couple of years, people paid for apartment rent more than we paid for our mortgage; and since our income was higher and higher each year, we were able to pay additional each month without hurting our financial life until we paid off.

Damn you spend less than my husband and I! We have 2 children We live in the bay too… Estimate we pay over 10, 000 a month together for essentials, our rent, kid activities. That’s why we just bought a house in sac and are leaving very soon. Lol it’s so expensive. Renting isn’t worth it!

Your internet fee are pretty cheap. We pay for our Comcast internet $147 a month in Oregon. It’s only internet and phone line for my fax machine. With out tv cable. Our PGE is almost $250 a month . We have a gas heating system and I don’t know why my Electricity bill so hight every month. Maybe I should change my electrical water heater 🤔( I’m a homeowner) or it something else makes my bills so high.

Yeah tbh most places on the west coast are about like that, you just gonna know what you’re willing to sacrifice and go without.

She’s totally disconnected. It can cost this, it can cost more, but for most people it’s much less and under worse conditions. Many apartments are a single house split into 4 separate units in the bay. That’s the truth

And PG&E is never 50 dollars, that scam of a company is 200

*Per person (not the whole
*Means 100K is not enough for a single person.

$70 per month for car insurance when you have to carry full coverage on leased vehicles sounds cheap to me. Also, internet in this area of the Midwest is usually about $100. The cost of the lease seems comparable. The rest is pretty pricey - except gas. That seems normal as well.

😅I barely make half of that in a month...my rent could never be $3k I wouldn't be able to eat. I live in East bay. Rent $1500, car $300, insurance for both $300, utilities $200, wifi $60, food $200, phone $90= $2, 750/$2, 900 paycheck 🤔

My car insurance is never lower than $200. It’s not a fancy car at all.
