For the first time there's someone saying follow your natural movement and don't force yourself to do things you're not comfortable

Guillotine style just feels fucking awful on my shoulders.

Always took the 45 degree angle advice too seriously and did all my pressing movements with my elbows fixed. Started flaring my elbows more and more recently, pain free, and I have seen a massive improvement in my gains and pumps

Whatever doesnt cause pain is about the best advice anyone can get when it comes to lifting

It’s all about the shoulders not disengaging. If you can raise your elbows without your rotator cuff, lats disengaging.. you’ll get a better upper chest stretch. Just don’t let he shoulder pop up and forward. Most important thing.

I've been bench pressing for a long time. I'm 57. Years ago I got really bad shoulder impingement that physio didn't sort out. I had an operation to sort it out. Rehab took a long time. I eventually started benching again and got bad impingement in the other shoulder. I heard about hanging from a bar being good for your shoulders so I gave it a try .Got up to 3x 30 seconds. The result is I have no pain and I can bench pain free for the first time in years. It even rehabbed my shoulder that had been operated on. Now as a warm up I hang for 30 secs and do a couple of physio moves with a broom handle.
I do tuck my elbows in now.
Hope this helps someone.

My regular bench grip is close to what most would call a narrow grip. Just more comfortable on my long arms and engages my chest and arms while not destroying my shoulders

"what I don't what you guys to get caught up in"

just an experienced man looking out for other guys so they make the most efficient and injury free gains. Top notch and says a lot about you as a person mike. Thank you

Guillotine style = Shoulder pain, and minimal chest development for me.
Nipple line = elbows around 45° works great for me, no pain, good gains.

The Guillotine bench pressed and blew my shoulder, complete reconstruction ...took me 6 months to be somewhat right again, but with only 90 percent mobility. Please follow the form you feel good about, that's my advice 😊

Dr. Mike said "as I pull out" and didn't make a joke about it. You're slippin' Dr. Mike.

Case in point everyone is different and what might feel right for one person may feel completely wrong for another person. Do what feels comfortable, even if it flies in the face of conventional wisdom.

I like that you focus on what feels good on your joints.

I ruined my shoulders pressing guillotine style. Had really strong shoulders, weaker chest. Just a tip, I feel amazing stretch with dumbbells bc the more natural hand position is palms slightly bent in, not facing your lower half (barbell)

One of a few reasons why i like the dumbbell bench press vs the barbell

guillotine style feels great. When I tuck in my elbows, my shoulders hurt. Thank you. I needed to hear that.

Thank you so much for this. Encouraging people to persist with their training and not listen to the negative personalities on the internet is super important these days. 👏🏼

Once I hit 40, I switched to dumbbells for pressing. It's the pronated position in the forearms on the barbell that bothers my elbows more than any shoulder issue.
