3 Tips to avoid the greenwashing trap when you’re shopping for clothes:⁠

1. Read the brand’s website and ask questions to their customer service.⁠ Personally I love it when my customers ask questions before placing their orders! 💙⁠

2. Learn to spot the keywords that are too vague -- "green, eco-friendly, earth-loving, pure".⁠ If it sounds like sexy marketing, it probably is!⁠

3. Use social media to demand transparency: you can tag a brand on your posts, add the hashtag #whomademyclothes and see if the brand cares to respond!⁠

All your videos really motivated me to actively look for sustainable clothes for this winter, I need one or two new jumpers. There is absolutely nothing in my size. I know, I should lose weight but it’s not that easy and the brands that claim to have plus size clothing really mean they’ve got XL. So I’ll have to muddle through and balance size and price. 2nd hand is working out better though.

Green washing is so frustrating when you are honestly trying to make more sustainable choices! Especially with something like clothing where it isn't possible to just look at the ingredients list or the type of packaging or something like that.

I remember when I first started watching your videos (maybe five years ago?) I reached out to a brand and asked them about their sustainability/ethics. Nothing was listed on the website. Their reply was something like, "We don't have any information regarding ethics or sustainability at this time."

I'd love to see Justine do a video on Pact - they always seem to have massive sales on their clothing, and the items I got had a lot of sewing errors that seemed to be the product of rushing. I spoke to their customer service, and they were very happy to give me store credit but had no answer at all about my labor concerns. The brand has a number of eco certifications, but there is no information about where the clothes are produced - not even where their organic cotton is grown.

I would prefer laws and somebody who cares that those laws are followed. As an end customer its not my responsibility to check wording and get in contact with producers. Cloths is one, food, furniture, tech stuff...I need at least something to rely on. Nevertheless...I love your work as its my responsibility as an consumer to be aware and educated. ❤

"demand the transparency" is really the key. Last year, I purchased a wood watch from Holzkern. Shortly after that, I watched a Test video by one Youtuber and he mentioned as a sidenote, it was made in China. I have no problem the product was made in China but there was no such an information on their website at all! So, I wrote them via Mail, commented on their YT channel etc. After a year, I still haven't gotten any reply at all.
Also, Gieswein is a famous brand for sustainable wool shoes made from the local sheep wool in Austria. They use their local wool but are manufactured in China. I mean, wth!

Justine can you please do a video on what happens to clothes that are bought online and returned. I’ve never bought any clothing online, but I know lots of people that order many things in full knowledge they aren’t going to keep them all. Are these clothes resold or do they go into waste?

I can not afford really sustainabke brand but I have the rule never buy syntetics exept viscose. I only buy natural fabrics. Usually I shop at outlets to affird better quality
