There are many drugs which are available which everyone buys from the pharmacy that can cause kidney damage. Most of the drugs are excreted through kidneys. So kidney is a very important organ which has to be preserved. We have to avoid toxins. Toxins which we consider medically is some of the aminoglycosides for e.g. which is an antibiotic which is used most commonly in our hospitals, physicians and in the presence of any of those infections that can cause a kidney damage. we should take care when you are using cancer drugs because sometimes we have to hydrate these patients before using these drugs like cisplatin, cyclophosphamide or nephrotoxic drugs which should be very careful when we use it. Other drugs which we use very commonly is cyclosporine and tacrolimus in renal transplant patient and some other nephritic syndrome. Those drugs also can cause kidney damage. so we have to keep monitoring when we use these drugs ultimately. The most common drug nowadays that everyone use is painkillers, NSAIDS. They are COX 2 inhibitors and these drugs can damage your kidneys to an extent that sometimes it may be difficult for the kidneys to recover to some extent if you are using these drugs for a prolonged period of time. Antifungals like amphotericin and some of the other antibiotics like colistin can cause kidney damage and hence we should be very careful in using these drugs as well as take a precaution. If you have a kidney disease definitely ask your doctor if these drugs are safe or not.
