How can one improves one’s memory? For instance memorizing what I read, thought, saw a long time ago and not forgetting it.

My parents forced me into a speed reading night course in 7th grade. They told me to read the first paragraph and last paragraph of every chapter of a book normally, buy everything in between bounce your eyes from left to right on each line. Didnt make me any smarter or faster whatsoever. Thank goodness I was pretty.
