One tip I have when it comes to improving your reading/reading faster: you have to read a lot, and consistently. This will cause your average reading speed to naturally increase, and more importantly, it'll help you develop different "speeds" that you will use for different kinds of books. You will get a better sense for when you need to slow down vs speed up, and you will naturally start switching between modes when necessary. Serious/classic literature will force you to slow down, but when you read a run-of-the-mill modern self-help/productivity book, you can tear through it in a day.

According to Jim Kwik book's (Limitless), the three obstacles that prevent us from reading quickly are:
1\ Regression
2\Outdated skills
3\ Subvocalization

Regarding subvocalization, I noticed that when I was very young and read books only in my native language I never subvocalized and I read much quicker. However, when I started reading in English as my first foreign language I needed that voice in my head in the beginning when I wasn't too fluent, after that it stayed with me and I wasn't able to get rid of it since. Now, regardless of language I pronounce words in my head and I know it makes me a slower reader, but I can't stop.

Great vid Ali, thanks! Here are my quick notes about it guys:
1. Reduce Subvocalization in Your Head
- reduce it to read faster,
- it requires practice, don't worry at the beginning,
- When to avoid subvocalization?
- when you want to scan fast through the text to find important parts,
- when you just want to read fast.
- When to subvocalize?
- to enjoy a book you like,
- you need to really understand or learn hard part of a text.

2. Read the Middle
- use your peripheral vision
- don't read from the beginning of line till the end,
- read the middle between these two.
- you may try to do it when want to read really fast.

3. User Your Pointer
- our eyes don't move smoothly on their own,
- they need a pointer to follow, it can be:
- pen,
- finger,
- anything.

4. Gamify the Experience
- might be fun,
- try to read as fast as you can through paragraphs while trying to remember what it was about.

5. Write a Summary
- it will help you better memorise the content of a book,
- Ali suggest to make those notes after reading a book,
- I would say to make them even more often:
- after each chapter or important part,
- after each page.

I've been practicing speed reading for the past few months, reducing sub vocalisation, and the one thing which kept me back was that I always felt i might be losing out on information, which might be important it was like this constant fight in my head bringing my speed down. But this is just a habit we have in our heads. I'm still trying, and yes the books I enjoy reading, i read them slowly understanding everything. But when it comes to productivity books like my recent one - rich dad poor dad, i did the speed reading because of the repetition of the same ideas throughout the pages, and it worked. Although not as good as the best readers out there but yes it's achievable with almost everyday's practice which i mostly do in the newspapers.. skimming through facts and reading carefully things I feel are useful for me or my career. And this video gave me that validation i needed, to know that it's okay... To read fast...and feel like I might be missing out on things. I just need more practice. Thanks Ali!

I second your notion template, I’ve been using it for uni since I watched your original video and I’ve never looked back. I even got compliments from professors when I showed them my reading notes.

Hi guys, I just want to say this with regards to Ali Abdaal's videos. If you ever feel that you need to constantly be productive and achieve perfection every time, please understand and accept that there is no such thing. Life is all about doing your best in the time that you have, and if you are someone who wants to continuously achieve perfection, know that it is not always possible; it is okay to have days where you don't do anything, it is okay to take a break, to relax, to take your mind off things. Ali Abdaal has the mentality and ability to continuously work and be productive with a very tight schedule and get things done as he has centred his life around that and now has the mindset that he must continue in this way as he know has to practice what he preaches in a sense. Please, when watching these videos, I know many people feel depressed/anxious/feel uncertain that they can't even come anywhere near achieving what Ali Abdaal has achieved. Please, don't compare your life to Ali's. You lead your own life, forge your own path in life. I do not subscribe to Ali Abdaal because it stresses me out just how 'perfect' his life is in terms of his productivity and work ethic & even looking at the titles of his youtube videos stresses me out; for me it seems incomprehensible but he is living proof of it but, I want to live my life without comparing. Please when watching his videos, be mindful that yes, it may appear perfect in a perfectly edited video, but, please note that behind the scenes, life can be messy. So, please as I know the titles of some of his youtube videos may make you feel psychologically that you are somewhat inadequate/falling behind in this world, please take sanctity in the knowledge that you shouldn't think this is unattainable; you do not see his hard work, his negative battles, his mistakes behind the scenes that has led him to this moment. I don't know who will even read this comment but I am writing this more for me if anything and for anyone else who may be feeling low. I am a medical student in my second year and I take it day by day, most days I am productive and positive, other days, I can procrastinate days on end and feel negative, this is simply the yo-yo effect of being a medical student. Please, accept that Ali Abdaal's 'perfect' life he represents on youtube should not be comparable to your life to the point where you become anxious and stressed over every little detail of your life. It is okay if your life is not perfect, it is okay if you mismanage your time, take baby steps everyday or whenever you feel like. There is no rush. Have a good day people.

Hi from japan. im a japanese junior doctor.

"In general, I'm a big fun of gamifying all different components of my life, because it just makes life more interesting. And it means that skill acquisition like learning new stuff just becomes so much more fun when you turn it into a little game that you play with yourself." - Ali Abdaal

this is my first note on notion.
I thought you made your success by this way of thinking.

I can totally relate to what you meant by not subvocalising the words to read faster. I was so frustrated that I could read fast sometimes but not all the time. Now that you mentioned about this subvocalising thing I finally realised that was something that happened to me when I felt distracted and read slowly! 👍🏻
