Absolutely, tempo has had a lot of bad press in recent years but I believe it is worthy of a place in most peoples programmes and only doing Z2 or z5 or higher doesn't really prepare you for mentally coping with extended efforts of tempo that you may well get in an event.

I swapped my 90 minute rides at 65%-70% FTP for 90 minute rides at 75%-80% FTP and have seen huge gains in FTP as well as in body composition.

Show me the science of “tempo” being more optimal for anything compared to any other zone, and I’ll start believing. Until then, it’s just a bunch of people saying “I think this” and “I think that”. Does it give any gains in fat ox, mitochondrial function, increased capillaries, or increased stroke voiume than something at LT1 or slightly below LT1? If so, I have never seen it. Does it do something to the body that is more optimal than going right at or slightly below LT2? If so, I have never seen it. Does it do something more optimal to the body than VO2 max work? If so, I have never seen it. What I have seen is that it is sub optimal for anything you care to pick EXCEPT making the person “feel” like they are working hard enough to be making gains, but not too hard to be good and tired at the end. It is a black hole zone that should be avoided unless credible evidence can be shown that it is superior in SOMETHING.
