Brittle Nail Syndrome | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Supplements

Brittle Nail Syndrome is a relatively common condition that causes weakened structure and health of nails. Brittle Nail Syndrome can be either primary, meaning there is no known cause, or secondary, meaning that it is secondary to another underlying cause or condition. There are a variety of causes, risk factors and associated conditions that coincide with Brittle Nail Syndrome, including iron deficiency, biotin deficiency, certain dermatologic conditions, fingernail biting and many others. All of these causes lead to abnormalities in the growth and keratinization of the nails. In this lesson, we discuss in more detail these causes, including the signs and symptoms of Brittle Nail Syndrome, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated, along with nutrient supplements that may be helpful in improving nail health and quality.

I've always wondered about this. Even as a child I had it but only really affects my toenails. No podiatrist or doctor had a reasonable answer. Thanks!

I have the long strips down All my nails. Fingers and toes, but mine grow like crazy. I use hand moisturizer, oils and other things to keep my skin soft and moist. I have an acute iron deficiency and multiple Sclerosis. So now I know why I have this .

Before I went on Keto, my nails were horrible! Brittle nails, striation, dry skin, even my hair was horrible...thin, dull. When I cut my carbs down to basically none, and no sugar, and ate only a few non-starchy veggies, upped my good fat caloric ratio, and moderate protein, not only did I lose 75 lbs. and never felt better, but my nails, hair and skin is beautiful and healthier than ever! I'm 70 years old and wish I never listened to the false science of the SADD...Standard American Diet Death!

Folic acid can affect iron uptake. I get tons of iron and still anemia persists.. When I take folic acid aupplements, anemia goes away.

Sometimes using nail clippers will provoke splitting. I have half of the causes on your list.

I would think over use of hand sanitizer would also effect nails.

I have had this problem as long as I could remember- something weird?- since I have had bariatric surgery and am on big doses of vitamins and minerals- & most of my doctors concede I fight a malnourished spectre- my nails Crack and break much less often. Also I believe it's part of my heritage - Daddy had it too- and my psoriasis is a gift from Mama's side.

[ Cov** & Nail ridging (longitudinal ]
I think I got longitudinal ridging (onychorrhexis) after getting Cov. Anyone else going through the same thing? Also I'm losing a ton of hair for a period of time. What's the cause? I think my body is not utilizing vitamins somehow and I think vitamin supplements (esp B) are somewhat helping with hair loss, but I think there' something deeper going on. Any medical ideas?
