Weak Nails are a problem faced by few people this could be due to nutritional deficiencies. The commonest cause for Weak Nails is not a nutritional problem, but a genetic problem. People who have Weak Nails tend to have them from a young age and it may not be the same with other members of the family. It is not a hereditary thing, it may be part of their genetic structure. So they may it find much use even if they take supplements but for some people brittle nails can be caused by anemia. Anemia is a condition where the red blood cells, reduce in number because they are not getting enough iron or getting enough vitamins like iron or folic acid to Vitamin B12. So these are the common causes for anemia or it can be other causes like patient is having severe bleeding during periods or you have a worm infestation and the worm is sucking up the blood from intestines or these are the other possible causes of anemia. Also when people come with Brittle Nails, we do a very simple test called as the CBC, which checks for the red blood cell count, as well as the hemoglobin count and if we are having anemia, we investigate them further, if they are having any other deficiencies. Along with anemia, we also check other vitamin deficiencies, as biotin deficiency can cause brittle nails and in some people with normal levels of vitamins with supplement biotin with biotin containing capsules which is given for hair problems and also it helps the nail to improve in thickens and structure and it becomes less brittle. So if you are having this since several years, it is unlikely to improve but as though some propel may benefit if it is a recent onset, you may need a blood workup by your dermatologist.
