Jake the brogrammer here... College for coding... this has been an ongoing debate for a very, very, VERY long time. In this video we break down the questions: Should you go to college to become a developer? Is a computer science degree worth it? And what our 2 cents on the issue is. Lets dive in!

I think it comes down to what you’re looking for tbh. I like how you specified specific languages and areas of Soft development that don’t need a college degree. But with that being said don’t be afraid to go to college if you do want something beyond this. You most likely won’t be working at top fintech companies or some of the leading tech companies within 5 years if you’re self taught. It’s possible; you will hear stories of people who have done it, but the fact of the matter is that not everyone has that much drive. And if you do have that drive a college degree could often outweigh the negatives. It’s really choice by choice imo.

TLDR: if you don’t go to college you most likely won’t have the same opportunities as early on in your career.

Education is not just about knowing languages, it’s about having strong basis everywhere and the capacity to learn whatever technologies you will need in the future. To adapt as things evolve.

React is not a language, it’s a library. A JavaScript library. Same for JQuery. Express, Vue.js and Angular are not languages either, they are JavaScript frameworks. And what’s at the top of the the taught languages ? JavaScript. How strange.

What you are advocating for is people learning how to piss code in a specific framework, a skill that will probably be useless 10 years from now. What employers want is a person understanding the main languages and capable of adapting quickly to any new framework they might encounter.

They also want someone capable of designing a software, not just coding. Design Patterns, best practices, code smells, code quality management, Git, continuous integration, writing documentation, project management… All that is also part of a programmer’s job, and you learn that in school.

Finally, not knowing C/C++, Java and others like them condemn you to work in the web/app bubble. And if you think THAT is the programming world, you are very wrong.

In short: you want to teach people “coding”, education teaches them software engineering. And the second is much more valuable.

You do have a point for Swift though. Go would be another nice addition.

The comparison of coders to electrician is on point, electrical engineer that is something else

Your opinion is a bit radical. There are core fundamentals outside of programming languages (i.e., boolean algebra, concurrency, etc.) that are more frequently taught in college. I would argue java and python are most commonly taught in school, which are very useful and gives you a great foundation.

But in most of the big companies are shortlisting fresher for required bachelor's degree in relevant computer science fields 🙄🤔 so what about that?? We still need degrees for these companies?? Reply me!!

I started my data science degree 4 weeks ago after self learning to code by myself for 14 months. Im so happy i did, im only in my 4th week at university and we're already discussing things like databases and sql, clusters etc, before i decided to go to university i heard negative thing's like self learning is better, they dont teach you relevant things in uni etc, i can confirm that is a lie. Yes i self taught myself to code in python and that was a great ultimate boost to start uni, ive basically started my first class as one of the top students (only after 4 weeks) so i think a mix of the 2 is vital, im 37 and plan on being a junior data scientist within a year. Just do it guys, save stress of being rejected just because u dont have a degree. Plus i only paid £20, 000 for my 3 year data science degree here in London and the government paid for it via the student finance loan. University is very structured allowing you to feel your doing each step perfectly, but im also doing a data science bootcamp alongside it so ill always be ahead of whatever university throw at me. Be smart 🤓

You are so wrong… you make coders, college makes engineers. Engineers are the ones doing interesting things.
