In this video, we’re going to talk about egg yolks and the egg yolk myth.

Many people only eat egg whites instead of eating the egg with the egg whites and yolks. I think the big concern people have with eating egg yolks is increasing their cholesterol. But, I believe egg yolks only increase the good cholesterol (the HDL cholesterol).

The difference between good cholesterol (HDL) and the bad cholesterol (LDL) has to do with the direction of where cholesterol is going in relation to the liver. The cholesterol coming out of the liver is considered good cholesterol, and the cholesterol going into the liver is considered bad cholesterol. So, if both of these are high, but the exchange is balanced, then that may just mean that your body needs more cholesterol to heal something.

Cholesterol actually acts as a natural bandaid to help heal certain parts of the body when you’re under stress.

Egg yolks do increase some cholesterol, but only the good cholesterol. Egg yolks also have way more vitamins and minerals than egg whites. Cholesterol from egg yolks even helps support hormones.

Egg yolks contain about 300 mg of cholesterol, but your body actually makes about 2000 mg of cholesterol every single day.

My doctor told me I needed to lower my cholesterol about the same day my friend was told the same thing by his doctor. I laughed at my doctor and my friend started to take the drugs his doctor gave him. 5 years later my friend had a heart attack, the entire time I kept on trying to tell him cholesterol is needed by the body. Luckily he survived and now he listens to me.

I have a friend who started bringing boiled eggs ( a bunch) to work every day because of some health reason or other. But he never ate the yolks (which eating the whites alone is gross to me.) One day I questioned him why and I forget his answer but it was some heath reason. He said, you want my yolks, and I'm like hell yeah, certainly don't want to see you thrw them away.

It's good to have some sanity on the subject. One other point o ponder - our brain is 30 or 40% cholesterol.

So glad to hear that whole eggs are not unhealthy.  We have chickens and so lots of fresh eggs. One of my favorite breakfasts is a poached egg on a homemade whole wheat english muffin with a slice of cheddar cheese.

Hi Dr Berg. I love all your videos. I'm just confused by your point on LDL being coming back to the liver. Because in your earlier vid on cholesterol you mentioned that HDL is the one that is recycled. So which is correct? Or is this a new discovery. Please reply as i don't want to quote the wrong thing as this is a very controversial subject. God bless and thank you in advance.

Double check the arrows on HDL/LDL. High density lipoproteins are the ones that are returning to the liver. The density increases as the "cargo" is delivered.

My doctor just warned me about my cholesterol today. Im doing Keto + IF and my levels are elevated by .15 - I persuaded him to give it atleast 6 months before starting taking any pills. I'm not going to take any pills, but that might get him of my back for 6 months. In other news he also wants to give me Metformin even though i've "cured" myself from diabetes by eating healthy.

Hi Dr Berg, Is it true that the way we prepare eggs can damage the protein structure and make the cholesterol bad when eaten? If that is the case, what is the best way to prepare eggs? Some say its only good when eaten raw or mildly cooked. what of fried, poached and scrambled eggs? do they destroy the protein structure and make the cholesterol bad? I will really appreciate ur opinion on this.

Dr Berg!
If a bloodtest shows high LDL and HDL does that mean everything is actually OK? And that what would be a problem is high LDL and moderate/low HDL?
Thanks so much

Dr Berg, my primary physician has told me to reduce my yokes (2 eggs scrambled in olive oil daily) to just one yoke with the two egg whites. Told me my ldl was too high. I took his advice for three months and my ldl reduced by 54, from 154 to 100. His reasoning is high ldl contributes to arterial plaque. He says he would like to see my ldl under 100. Is this a good thing?

So what happens if you eat over 2000mg of cholesterol every day?

I sometimes eat up to 8 eggs a day which makes 2400 grams of cholesterol. Having over 2000 grams have any problem?

Thanks Dr. Berg I can now continue eating my eggs ( white and yolk) without that nagging concern re the yolk ! Based on no scientific evidence whatsoever I just felt mother nature surely hadn't got the egg that wrong and it must be okay to eat them without extracting the yolk, so I did and so I will!

I LOVE eggs.. My favorite breakfast is an egg sandwich with three eggs, three slices of bread and a slice of cheese, sometimes some ham if it's there.. It's quick, inexpensive, nutritious, balanced, hot as opposed to cold, satiating, and just as important, delicious.. The macros are also not bad at all..
