In the 1970s, five men struggling with being gay in their Evangelical church started a Bible study to help each other leave the “homosexual lifestyle.” They quickly received over 25,000 letters from people asking for help and formalized as Exodus International, the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organization in the world.
But leaders struggled with a secret: their own “same-sex attractions” never went away. After years as superstars in the religious right, many of these men and women have come out as LGBTQ, disavowing the very movement they helped start. Focusing on the dramatic journeys of former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor, PRAY AWAY chronicles the “ex gay” movement’s rise to power, its unscientific influence, and its legacy of profound harm.

I hate the expression "the gay lifestyle". What lifestyle? I'm a software engineer, a car nut, a weightlifter, a music lover and a 100 other things. I just happen to come home to my husband instead of a wife.

Kind of nuts, the second couple from the opening clip are Tom and Donna Cole, my parents. I knew most of these people as a kid. Been hoping for something like this to come out for awhile.

I did gay conversion therapy for 10 years, I didn't change, I just became suicidal, now I'm OK after 2 years since 2019

As a person who attended "Exodus International" I can't thank you enough for showing people what really happens in 'conversion therapy'. I know that this is one type of it and I do hope this documentary touches on how the counselors would even hit on us who were attending and would follow us into the bathrooms and cars so we wouldn't get anyone who was attending their phone numbers. Now, my parents and the church who told my parents about this group what really happens behind the doors. Sometimes it's triggering to explain what happened at Exodus. I got a psychiatrist last year after I suffered a panic attack spurred on by PTSD (as mentioned in the trailer by a woman) so this is also going to give me clarity that I'm not crazy for having the same thoughts as the ones being interviewed. I think the survivors of conversion therapy really don't understand the traumas it caused us as teens. A huge thank you!!!

It truly never goes away. My heart ache for those who were forced to believe there was something bad with them.

I’m a devout Christian and HATE the way the Church has treated the LGBTQIA+ community. This was wrong. Simple as that. We don’t have to agree on everything but as a Christian I’m taught to LOVE everyone. SIMPLE AS THAT.

Yet to this day, there are still people who believe this can work and still pushing it.

Ryan Murphy continues to knock it out the park. This looks incredible and I can't wait to watch. I can't begin to imagine how traumatising these 'camps' must've been. Glad people are shedding light on this nonsense.

The fact that people like this still exists just makes me want to cry....my mom wanted to enroll me in some of the exodus programs as a teen, thank god she came around and before she passed a few years back she 100 percent believed gay people are born gay and it is not a choice, bless her.

As someone who was traumatized from being gay. This was therapy. I am not alone. It's amazing how people think this still works...

Definitely watching. Crazy that people actually think that “being gay” can be prayed out of you. I would assume that it can be denied but it’s not gone.

This makes me sad. My nephew is gay, he came out to my sister during the pandemic, she is okay with it and welkome his boyfriend in the family. The idea that some people can't accept themselves because of society breaks my heart.

Time for a double feature: _Pray Away_ first, then _But I'm A Cheerleader_ to feel good again.

I hope that whoever is struggling with their gender identity or sexual orientation watches this and finds that there are better communities out there than those who want to change the person you are.

As the mom of gay kids, I cannot fathom not loving my kids because they’re gay, or sending them to a place like this. Jfc

I used to be ex-gay. The psychological phenomena that the ex-gay people don't understand and which would obliterate their theories is the dissociative response to trauma. You can believe in what you're doing, you can dissociate so much that you don't know your core self.
