Grand Moff Tarkin complains about Orson Krennic’s Death Star project to Grand Admiral Thrawn.

While Tarkin and Thrawn are both ruthless. Tarkin lacks Thrawn's ingenuity. There is also a fundamental character difference between them. Thrawn prefers loyalty over fear. Tarkin prefers fear over any loyalty.

Director Krennic was such a great villain, I dare to say he didn't deserve what happened to him.

The genius here is the emperor.

The emperor was smart enough to make both Thrawn and Krennic competitive enough to think that the Emperor would only give funds/resources to ONE of them, considering their success.

Obviously that’s not the case in the Empire. Palpatine was smart enough to realize that both projects were very important.

So both Krennic and Thrawn were just pawns in his game. That’s the real genius of both projects, because as he did with Maul, when both projects were complete, he just cast the characters aside. They served their purpose.

Tarkin seems to dislike the Death Star project here. But by the end of Revenge of the Sith he is apparently supervising its construction in that scene with the Emperor and Vader.

Had the TIE Defender project continued, and the Empire deployed them during the Battle of Yavin or Endor, the Rebellion may have lost the war, or prolonged it.

I'm sure Darth sidious simply liked thrawn's project and labeled it a "maybe", but the death star was happening, it's project and schemes were started by the separatist alliance by sidious orders.

Sidious wanted the death star, director krenic simply took control over the project. And both krenic and tarkin wanted to use the death star for their positions and egos (tarkin started with his after he saw the death star indeed worked).
