I always took it that they are both men that have the emperors ear. They don’t really outrank each other in a new hope but the Death Star is Tarkin’s “thing” so Vader follows his lead.

The Reason is simple: Tarkin was under Palpatines protection at the time.
To kill Tarkin or disrupt his work on the death star was to defy Palpatine. They were in a way equals under the Emperor.

The reason their relationship is undefined is because the emperor told Vader that he could kill anyone he saw fit except for tarken, he was deemed too valuable. Tarken knew about this and used it to stretch the boundaries of power between Vader and himself.

I figured their relationship was based on respect. That Tarkin didn't fear Vader and respected his prowess as a warrior and pilot and Vader respected how Tarkin operated. With a strong, direct approach instead of a snivelling backhanded approach like other Imperials.

Vader has no rank in Disney canon. He is simply portrayed as the Emperor's right hand man, and his representative, but Vader had no formal military or political rank. He simply just appeared to do what Palpatine wanted.

In Star Wars Legends canon, Vader did have a rank, and that was that he was the Supreme Commander of the Imperial military, so he did outrank Grand Admirals and Grand Generals.

However, a Grand Moff is a political position that includes military power, not strictly military itself, so it would be like comparing the US President's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to a state Governor. They are simply different types of positions.

The empire is a pyramid, with palpatine at the top, Stormtroopers on the bottom and Tarkin right below Palpatine. Vader has no place on the pyramid, but more so is in his own space outside of the pyramid, wherever he goes, hes the top dog, unless told otherwise by palpatine

I believe that Vader was only outranked by the Emperor himself, but he obeyed Tarkin out of respect. Also, the Death Star was Tarkin's achievement, so he carried a lot of weight there, even if the Sith Lord actually did technically outrank him.

There actually was a comic where Vader upset Palpatine who then deranked him and put him under the Tarkins command. This actually happened several times with different Moffs. Otherwise it is stated that the only person with higher authority than Vader is Palpatine himself.

Both were highly trusted and valuable assets of Palpatine's. In the galaxy, Vader held the higher rank. Within the depths of the empire, they were treated relatively equal. Given the task at hand one would take the lead over the other

Do I remember it wrong or wasn't the title of Grand Moff extra created for Tarkin because he was an essential part of Paladins plans and he liked him. And didn't Plapatin himself put in the construction of the Death Star Grand Moff Tarkin in command right in front of Vader while Vader putting him above Vader and that's why he could talk back to Vader and even give him commands to stop?

Vader was 2nd to palpatine he answered to no one moff had a good relationship with tarkin that’s how he was able to calm him down

I think I remember a book or a comic about the Clone Wars that I think you covered about how Tarkin respected Vader when he was Anakin. And I think Anakin had a lot of respect for him, this translated into a mutual respect for each other. Meaning that the only person that I think Vader respects is Tarkin overall.

Tarkin never outranked Vader, but had already earned Vader’s respect. E.g. the citadel

In the scene where Tarkin blows up Alderaan Vader is standing there holding Leia like he’s nothing more than some kind of security guard for Tarkin 😂😂
