BARBOUR JACKET REVIEW - THE CHAP'S GUIDE TO WAXED JACKET JOY

The good old Barbour waxed jacket has been around in many forms since the late 1800's. But in an era of Gore Tex and the many other technical fabrics that make life ever more comfortable for wearers in almost any weather conditions, you may ask if the traditional British waxed jacket manufacturer still has a place in your wardrobe?

In this video we discuss our experiences of owning and living with a new Barbour Kyle jacket in the midst of a British winter (wet & cold) and how the venerable 100% cotton waxed garment really surprised us with it's rugged capability, as well as it's stylish appeal in any town & country situation.

A couple of tips for chaps with the old style Barbour jackets. 1. do not put them in the washing machine, the wax will migrate to the underside of the cotton outer, 2. store them somewhere with plenty of air circulation, not under other coats on a coatrack on an outside wall... unless mushrooms are a hobby of yours ;)

Great video. Bought one in 1998 Ireland. Never heard of them. Walked into a store. Showed me two jackets. A barbour plus cheaper brand. Picked the Beaufort. It was amazing jacket and useful for travel with film. Back took 35 rolls of films easy lol saved carry on space.
I used to wax it. Took it off before getting into car.

Hello again, I’ve been looking at Barbour jackets for the last 3 years. I really like them but the price tag was anywhere from $ 250–300 US dollars. Last year I found one on sale for $ 90 dollars. I pounced on that jacket immediately. Within minutes another chap grabbed one. The store only had 2 large and 2 XL. We both walked to the cashier with smiles on our faces. I’m looking forward wearing that jacket for years to come. Loved the boot video, those are nice boots you got my brother.

I absolutely love mine. I’ve got 2 barbour Bedale jackets and they’re brilliant when I wear them for things like fly fishing because they have really handy pockets. Customer service is superb as well

Fantastic video! I live in Sweden and honestly I give my testamony that there is no better jacket to wear during autumn, winter and spring. This winter I worn my Barbour Northumbria in -15 degree Celsius of course with a zip in liner and Barbour new tyne crew neck sweater. There is no better jacket.

A good friend indeed sir, I would buy you the Ashby style just to be witty and cheeky as they would say 😁 I'm currently looking at them for when I'm going hunting in the moderate weather times of the year. Thank you for the extra information

Hi Ash
Just found your channel and I've watched nearly all your video's. I have both a Barbour International Duke and a Barbour Ashby Jacket i find them excellent jackets to wear the Duke. I wear the Duke paired more with a nice pair of jeans and a T shirt or polo shirt. The Ashby i wear with jeans, chinos and either a jumper or sweatshirt. I used to have a Beaufort years ago and never got around to getting another one but recently managed to pick both these jackets up at a reasonable price.

Ash What a great gift The waxed jacket is one of the few items (maybe my Burberry Trench coat) that may increase in value South Shields to the city

I just ran into this video and yeah I'm a Barbour fan and much younger than you, although your way of describing Barbour jacket made my day! I bought a 70's solway zipper jacket with one crown last year. The touch of texture and hue of color are, not to mention, really good. The minuses are no hands warmer pockets and its own order due to aging, but still wearable in countries and towns for sure. Hope you cherish the jacket and memory with it. Greeting from Japan.

They are great jackets. I got one decades ago while in University. Some clothing comes into interest when a man reaches a certain age. For some odd reason when I hit 50 years, I had an undescribable "Need for Tweed" so I got a few items.

Nice review. I’ve been into waxed canvas and oil cloth for years. As an outdoorsman in the mountains of the US there really isn’t any modern equivalent where durability is concerned. I have not gotten my hands on a Barbour jacket yet, but I will.
In the US we have a company called Filson (originally started in 1850 to provision gold miners and loggers in the Pacific Northwest) that makes very nice tin cloth and oil cloth jackets. Along with their Mackinaw wool. Most of Filson line is more geared towards heavy duty use and not toward fashion, they do have a few items which are more fashion forward. My favorite being their Trech coat. They actually import their cotton wax cloth from Halley Stevenson in Dundee Scotland and sew them here in the us. It is a very nice jacket for three seasons here no matter how cold as they sell a 24oz Mackinaw wool zip in liner that I’ve worn in temps well below 0°f.
I appreciate the time you put into your videos.
Cheers.
