loved the music you chose..nice and calming....like both DE's but i still choose XFCE...nice vid comparing them Linux Mint never gets the love it rightly deserves. I run Arch on my laptop and tend to use xfce on it too. my desktop is running mint..even my wife on her dell laptop runs Mint Cinnamon..she loves it it's been going for two years now...which is what she wants something that just works.

What a pleasure to have a calm, informative video about something without all the "Press this and click that..." carry on that bombards us on so many Y-Tube videos. Thank You.

Great video and thanks for the inspiration! Subbed.

I'm late to the party, but my two cents... I enjoy taking older tech and wringing the most out of it I can, and I write quite a bit, so what that amounts to is that for the past few years I've run XFCE on absolutely every distro I've hopped. That's between 30 and 40 of all flavors. I really like it because even though it's not as light as window managers or LXQt, etc., it's still pretty light, and it has a ton of customization. It can really look really good.

Then I got into KDE with Garuda and a few others, and found that it's heavier, but not that much heavier. Then after all the hopping, I ended up on my very first distro, Mint Cinnamon. It always just works for me, so I thought I'd look deeply at Cinnamon and see what I found. It's lighter than KDE, but heavier than XFCE, and it (for me) strikes a nice balance between KDE-level customization and XFCE-lightness. I've tried MATE once or twice, but it just didn't feel as developed as I thought it would. I may have to take a look at it again on one of my other laptops to see if the experience is better now.

I ended up trying Nobara for about 48hrs. I was severely impressed how easy it was to get gaming. Steam worked out of the box. No tinkering. Some use case issues I had some games won't run without a vm for Windows and on top of that I couldn't get switched to my integrated GPU and use my Nvidia dGPU for passthrough. All the results came up positive and enabled for VT-d and iommu, but no dice through QEMU because it's not ready for Windows I suppose. It would just error when doing the vfio init through spice. I imagine if I get a dedicated workstation GPU (Seen some for $50, 24GB vram) that have similar performance to a GTX 900 series in gaming, I could get something working, but after 18 hours of tinkering and setting up fstab for 6 drives and my samba drive, jellyfin, vm struggles, graphics switching struggles, I kinda felt defeated and came back. It's getting closer.

Great video by the way. Audio seems to be wonderful now.

I like mate as it is simple, light, organized and makes me forget about the OS. A good OS has to make you forget that you are using it.

Does Wacom work on Mate? What about working on multiscreens, what works better ?

I'm curious what Cinnamon is doing in the background that slows it down a bit. I'm pretty new to this stuff so I don't even know if it's a major problem.

im making a super budget pc for my nephew for his daily use and some light emulator gaming, socket 1155 with a used xeon 1240v2 2x8gb ddr3 1600mhz ram, with either a gt730 or a rx550, should i go with cinnamon or mate ? taking that most of the older laptops iv saved i used mate, it think i should go with it like always, all this machine with a 256gb nvme will be around 150 us dollars.
