I always wondered why the guy with the US shirt was moved to tears. But after seeing this, he and only a few of the veterans who were standing next to Forrest could hear, what he had to say about Vietnam. So this was maybe one of the most important moments in the movie and no one could hear it.

What's important is that the guy dressed in the American Flag heard everything that Forrest said.

What's sad is that I'm pretty sure he might have changed a few people's minds in that crowd about the service men in Vietnam. I think this scene is also symbolic as the people who were there never got to explain their side if the story or their experiences.

I can only imagine what the protesters would do if they actually heard it. That speech is like really sad and also totally points the quagmire of that war that is often described as a big clusterf%^&. I'm sure most of them would be sad and angered even more.

Fun fact: the man in the American flag shirt is Abbie Hoffman. He was a political and social activisr who co-founded the Youth International Party and as a member of the Chicago Seven. He was also a leading member of the Flower Power movement.

I’ve seen those clips that those veterans threw away their medals, if they heard this they would be absolutely touched. No politics, accusations or demands, this is just plain fact about war, some people come home broken, some people don’t even come home.
