I divided my home into 48 sections using a “ list app “ and over two months I slowly checked off these different areas as I decluttered and it was hands down the easiest way to tidy my home ! Different sections : bar area, guest closet, medicine cabinet, etc.

When I clean, I aspire to "noticable improvement ". Because as you point out perfection is the enemy of getting anything done.

My number one rule I give to myself to help prevent clutter is don’t put it down put it away😂 thank you for this video. It helps me to cope with the mess of my house and know that it’s a slow progress to check clean all the time 😂

Sometimes I text my sister "hey text me and tell me you'll be at my house in 5 minutes". I get my best cleaning done last minute when someone's coming over 😂

This video SPEAKS to me!!! I never realized that the root cause of “messiness” and “clutter” is perfectionism. “I can’t do it all in the time that I have so I can’t do any of it at all”

"Perfection is temporary -- good enough lasts longer!" -- from someone on a Flylady thread years ago 😎 Stuck with me!

A tip I have to motivate me to clean/organize is watching cleaning/organizing videos while actually doing it. Like, if I’m not wanting to do dishes, I’ll watch Kitchen Nightmares while doing it to remind myself I don’t want a kitchen to look like any in the show, or watching Hoarders or Organizing YouTubers while cleaning the living room or bedroom. It’s just something that helps me get motivated to start and continue during deal cleans or if I’m being particularly lazy.

In one of your older videos you explained how often we overestimate how long a chore or task will take and you were right. I timed myself doing chores I kept putting off and found most could be done far more quickly and painlessly that I thought. Your message in this video is spot on as well. Thanks! 😘

I’ve come to accept the fact that there are going to be toys on my floor at any given time. I have young kids, there’s no avoiding it. I can clean and they follow up right behind me wrecking it again because that’s what kids do 😂
As long as the important things are done (laundry, dishes, floors swept & stuff like that) then I feel pretty okay about everything.

The “sliding scale” really pinged for me...I’m no mountain-climber, but I can manage an incline.
Also: as a writer, I have a fixed habit of writing...*something... every day. I’m going to transfer that to cleaning now.
Thanks Kallie!

"some people are hoarders, they don't even own a sponge".
Disagree. Hoarders own fifty three of them, they just can't find them to use them.

BEST TIP: Either pretend you’re moving (to declutter) OR pretend you’re getting pictures done for the listing of your house. Totally works.

Last night I was in tears overwhelmed due to the multiple tasks I felt needed to be done around the house. Your video gave me some encouragement to take small steps this morning to tackle a few of my clutter spots. Thank you <3

Ooof I needed this girl. Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel from a two month depression. Desperate need to declutter and clean but loved how u said "it didn't happen in a day and it won't get decluttered in a day"

Love it, I always hear "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good." Good enough is definitely a thing. Good enough is better than nonthing at all.

When I’m feeling lazy or not in the mood to clean or organize something that helps is watching the tv show Hoarders. It actually does motivate me to snap out of my lazy mood and go clean 🙂. Also, I like to use the commercial time during a show to get up and tackle something small and cook as I listen to a podcast.

I think I have said this on this channel before but that "53 Things..."video changed my "possession" habits. I had no idea how much crap I was holding on to that I NEVER USED! Sometimes it takes a another person's perspective to make a really good change

I've overcome hoarding tendencies with ongoing therapy, but being in a small 1 bed apartment I have to stay tidy or else I can't function. Your video has really helped. I have had to accept doing one small thing at a time and I write lots of lists. It's great when you get to cross off each one when its completed. It gives a real sense of achievement too. Thanks Kallie 🌺

Great advice as always. When my kids were little, but old enough to put things away, I used to play a "clean up" song and we would all clear up our respective clutter until the song was over. It worked pretty well. I did make the mistake of buying baskets which I would keep on the steps going to the second floor of my house. Throughout the day, I would place items in them that should have been stored on the second floor. As stuff accumulated in them, I became overwhelmed and those baskets would sit there for days until they were almost overflowing. In retrospect, I should have found them a home on the first floor or taken them upstairs as I cleaned up downstairs. But my transport container turned out to be another way of delaying the cleanup and I just made more work for myself. These days, I tolerate messiness better than I did as a young mother. I have learned to chunk things up into small goals and I try to focus on one goal each day. At the end of the day, I write down which goal(s) I met that day as an affirmation that I was successful. It's a much better way to end the day - focusing on the positive instead of what I failed to do. I doubt my home will ever be as neat and clean as I'd like it to be. But I've also learned to let go of my ideal of having a picture perfect home. In the grand scheme of things, it just isn't that important. All I want now is a place in which I am comfortable.

You're absolutely right about labels like "clean person" and "messy person" hindering people from improving. This also works in other areas of life. Labeling yourself as "bad at x" gives you an automatic out and you therefore refuse to try to do better.
