My mum and I used to have a "mad half hour" of cleaning every night, after my younger brother went to bed. Then, we would have a cup of tea together and I would be allowed to stay up an extra hour later than previously. I learned that having more freedom (staying up later because I was a teenager) also meant having more responsibility. But I enjoyed the time with my mum.

My dad never let us leave dishes in the sink. No matter how tired I am I don’t leave dishes in the sink. I don’t want a messy kitchen to wake up to. ❤❤❤

67 yrs. old and have practiced these two things since I had my own place: "a place for everything and everything in it's place" and "clean and tidy as you go." That covers it all. My mom taught us these and practiced these as well. Her house was always clean and tidy while raising 4 kids as a single mom.

My mother used to repeat throughout my growing years: No matter how clean your house is, if you have dirty dishes in the sink and your bed isn’t made, your home will look messy. To this day I go by that rule, and it’s true.

What you say about clutter is so true. About a year ago I spent about 30 min a day decluttering and donating. One closet, one room at a time until the whole house was done. Never over do it, just do consistently and set a small goal for the day.. I never thought that my house was dirty and I am not a hoarder but It's amazing what that does. I don't miss the stuff and it makes cleaning so much easier!

Thank you! I clean as I go in the kitchen, at night it is spotless, I never leave dirty dishes in the sink. I clean and sanitize daily too. I mop/sweep/vacuum the floors but not all at once, I do the kitchen, dining room one day, the living room, family rooms, entryway another day. Bathrooms are done on alternating days too, bedrooms are always clean as well, I have MS and get too tired to mop/sweep/vacuum everyday so I alternate room cleaning and dusting, it works for me. When guests come over they’re still amazed how clean my home is even despite my illness. I suppose if it progresses, I will hire weekly help.

Making beds, washing up after every meal, sweep, dust EVERYDAY keeps your home neat. Then regularly wash floors and sterilize bathrooms and toilets. Washing of Bed sheets at least once a week with towels. No needs for outside help. It's easy, it's routine AND I AM 74 YEARS YOUNG!!!

Love your list.
One addition, I never eat food outside of the kitchen or dining room.

Dishwasher malfunctioned and never stopped filling. Happened at night with need to redo floors. Suggest never to run appliances during the night

Though this is not a true 'cleaning' tip, it is something I heard on another channel the other day and am trying hard to follow. "Don't just move it, put it away". It makes a big difference in not accumulating clutter. Thanks for all your tips!

I worked in restaurants for the better part of a decade. CLEAN restaurants mind you, and the habits I learned there have been very helpful in terms of how I keep my hoke and in particular the kitchen and bathroom: dishes never left in the sink overnight, all the surfaces are wiped down and sanitized every AM and PM, etc. Even went so far as to invest in a UV light that I use weekly to eliminate germs and remove food odors. Anyone can visit at any time and I never have to rush around trying to make the plaxe look presentable. My home is my sanctuary and I keep it up as a way of expressing gratitude for the things that I have.

Grew up this way, practiced it all my life. Keeps it under control, and much easier in the long run. Your home feels much nicer to be in, and more relaxing too. It's all common sense surely.

When my kids were little they liked to play for a little in the tub after I washed them I would clean the bathroom since I had to stay in there with them. Be sure to already have the cleaning supplies in there. Sometimes it might be just wiping everything down with a Clorox wipe.

So agree! Everything in my home lives somewhere. Toss junk mail immediately. Fold laundry as soon as it’s out of the dryer. No clothes, shoes, towels on floor or left on surfaces. Just put away as you get undressed or after bathing. Clean up kitchen, pots/pans, etc., as you cook. And my mother’s advice was, never go through the house empty handed. There’s always something that needs to be put away.

I pick up at night before going to bed. A habit I started when I got married. I pretty much do most of your suggestions, and people always remark that my house is always perfect. It isn't, but it's always tidy and pretty clean.

30 mins a day is much easier than having a big cleaning day that you dread. Once you start a daily routine habit, it's actually easy to keep up with. The other plus is no matter when anyone unexpectedly shows up at your house, you won't panic. The house looks clean.
