Harry Welsh. The one man in history to tell off Ronald Spiers.

2:10 Spiers had to deal with a lot of trauma and PTSD from this moment. After returning home after the war, not rarely would he wake up, drenched in sweat, screaming at the ceiling of his bedroom, thinking exactly about this.
He would then have to re-count all 953 pieces of his cutlery and his 483 framed paintings, just to somewhat calm down again, to try to get back to sleep, wearing 8 of his best coats.
War is hell.

“Don’t even think about it!”
Lol. Welsh knew Spears had enough loot already… not that he ended up keeping any.

I was a medic assigned to Berchtesgaden Health clinic for a year 1989 to 1990 to its closure! So awesome . Ate lunch almost daily at the Hof.

Visited the Eagle’s Nest last week. A stunning massage of the grandest ego. What a view, what a place.

Between John O'Daniel's 3rd Infantry Division and Leclerc's 2nd Armored Division moving through the town the day before it's amazing there was anything left for Easy Company to loot.

At the end we hear them yelling "Hiyo Silver!" That is what Sobel always yelled, under his command whenever Easy Company was running somewhere.

This is a very impressive series that gets under your skin. But as a Swiss, I have to mention that at the end of the last episode the landscape shots are not from Berchtesgaden and not from Austria either. The landscapes shown are Lake Brienz with mountains in the beautiful Bernese Oberland, Interlaken and the Grand Hotel Giessbach in Switzerland🇨🇭

*From the National WW2 Museum:*

The 7th Infantry Regiment of the US 3rd Infantry Division got there first at about 1600 on the afternoon of May 4. They took Berchtesgaden without firing a shot. While the 7th Regiment fanned out through town, a platoon advanced up the mountain to Obersalzberg. When they arrived at the Berghof, Hitler’s home, they discovered the entire area was heavily damaged by a bombing raid conducted by the RAF on April 25.
...
The French 2nd Armored Division arrived a little later that afternoon. Early the next morning, the French made the trek all the way up to the Eagle’s Nest, which was untouched by Allied bombing, and made the most fantastic discovery of all: a wine cellar that contained an estimated half million bottles of the finest wine, champagne, and cognac imaginable. Amongst the cache were thousands of bottles of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, one of the most expensive wines in the world. In 2020, buying a bottle of late vintage Chateau Lafite Rothschild would set you back about $1000.
...
Last to arrive to the party was the 101st Airborne; they arrived in Berchtesgaden on the morning of May 5. They may have been last, but they were there to stay the longest. The 2nd Battalion, 506th PIR was the lead element of the 101st to arrive, and the officers and men began by securing the finest billets in town. Col. Sink, commander of the 506th, met with the commanding officer of the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd ID, and informed him that the 101st was relieving them. SHAEF ordered the 3rd ID men in Berchtesgaden back to their area of operations in Salzburg, Austria.

I live 25 minutes away from a town in Washington State. It's called Leavenworth. Looks JUST like this place. Minus the banners. Even the local McDonalds looks Bavarian themed. At least from the outside.

That was pretty much my grandpas experience only he was an M.P. stationed at SHAEF. He was in Frankfurt during the end of the war and got some interesting loot there himself from various prisoners he interrogated.
