I love Nixon in this scene. He knows his weekend pass is already doomed, so he gets in a snide little remark by stating the obvious and giving Sobel the answer he wasn't looking for.

As much of a hard-ass as Sobel was, its still sad what happened to him in the end. In 1970 he shot himself in the head. He survived but was left totally blind. He lived the rest of his life in a VA hospital and died of malnutrition (Presumably from staff negligence?) in 1987 at the age of 75.

I remember growing up thinking sobel was too hard. But as a man now who realizes the state in which the world was in, Sobel did a fantastic job. Only problem was he had grudges and jealousy, as well as a complete and total incompetence for reading a map, which was his ultimate downfall. But these men survived due to this level of training

As much as his training methods helped mold Easy Co. into an elite unit, I still think Sobel was chickenshit in some ways and made a big deal out of some issues that could easily be ignored. Hence, why the other officers called him the “Black Swan.”
