I like to think that due to Yashida attempting to take his healing factor, almost killing him in The Wolverine left his ability much less prominent than before. He went into hiding with Charles after the whole incident that wiped out the majority of the mutants and due to his reduced healing, the adamantium started to become more than his body could stand to fight.

His healing power works the same as every other normal person. As we grow old our immune system, healing etc slows down which causes us to age. Meaning we reach our peak in our late that we are slowly dying every day. Which is why we age until inevitably dying. Logans mutant power would theoretically work the same adamantium or not. He lives longer but eventually the body breaks down and healing slows, he ages to the point of a ordinary old man dying natural. The adamantium just sped up the process. Otherwise he might arguably have lived twice as long maybe, or indefinitely... who knows it’s all fiction.

The silver samurai sucked out like half of his healing factors. Initially, adamantium was neutralized because of his extreme powers in healing. But once his healing factors were decreased, he lost to the adamantium poisoning and it started to affect him. In otherwords, if the silver samurai didn't drain him of his power, Wolverine would be fine.

He lost the will to live because he was carrying a adamantiam bullet with him the whole movie

My theory is that in ‘the wolverine’ at the end when silver samurai drained his healing powers for a bit, it had a lasting affect on Logan, making his powers susceptible to decaying over time, which is well kinda what happens

I think his healing is slow because he is using all of it on metal poisoning

He died like a true warrior and was able to fight along side his offspring who was bad ass herself. It was his time to go and he was ready and he died his way fighting to protect who he loves.
