The best way to counteract this alarming trend is by educating yourself and becoming a more knowledgeable musician so that great music can make a return. This is why I'm passionate about teaching and have created comprehensive music learning courses and software to support this process. Check out my Channel Anniversary Sale below if you're interested, which contains all four of my music programs.

music isn't getting worse, popular music is getting worse.

I was working on a project at Ocean Way studios in Nashville. On the flight home I was reading Mix magazine and an older gentleman sitting next to me asked "Are you in the music business?" I replied "my accountant would argue otherwise, but yea." Well this gentleman was the engineer for Led Zeppelin, we had an amazing conversation and then he said something to me I never forgot. He said "As engineers and producers we used to capture performances now we create them."

This reminds me of how social media was meant to improve connection but ended segregating

My 15 year old daughter loves playing guitar. She approached me out of the blues at the age of 8 asking me to sign her up for guitar lessons. She told me the only way for her to be good at playing guitar is to watch the 80s and 70s rock band 🎸guitarist play. I grew up listening to 80s rock and my daughter loves listening to it with me on a road trip.

The paradox of having the world of music quite literally at your fingertips, yet being numb to it.

Music is only getting worse if all you listen to is pop music and the radio. For everyone else, it's one of the best times. So much more exposure and accessibility for artists, so many genres, so many blends. We have so much more music available to us now than we did decades ago.

The digitizing of everything has devalued it at the same time. Games, movies, music, books, etc. Having less things in your possession makes what you do have more valuable to you.

My wife and I will do a 1000 piece puzzle and listen to a whole album through, and discuss it as we work on the puzzle. It's become one of my favourite things to do.

Money, greed, short-term perspective influenced modern "music"

I'm a musician.I play in three bands, five nights a week. Our audiences love us and dance. We use small amps. The guitar players use a couple pedals. We have fun, the audiences have fun and the club owners make money. Real live music is still available, but just like when we were young, you got to work for it.

Sitting down, without distractions, and REALLY listening to an album once or twice a week has made me realize how much music I listen to nowadays, yet how little music I listen to.

INSIGHTFUL AS EVER! I agree 100% and as an artist with a studio I've struggled with "What's the point anymore?". Then I heard my song on our local radio station and realized that is why. It's a real thing that I created. Like you I grew up looking at album covers and sharing with buddies and working as a bus boy to pay for my albums. I still play live too which I need to be more grateful for!

I really appreciate groups like Post Modern Jukebox, to name just one, who are keeping different genres alive with great musicians and incredible singers.

This is a fantastic bit of social commentary. Speaks to something beyond just music. Our whole culture is increasingly 1) Easily produced, 2) Easily consumed, 3) Valued less.

Some of my best memories in my life are saving money shoveling snow, delivering papers as a boy and then going to the record store and buying new releases like Zeppelin 4, boot legs of Randy Rhoads with Ozzy and then being inspired to practice my guitar all day and night to learn the licks that were generationally soo inspiring. I truly believe Bach was the greatest musician of all time and his music is a gift from God and as we moved through history away from him the music has slowly devolved to what we currently have today so sad. Thank God for sheet music and old recordings.
