I'd normally call a senior by their surname - depends what they prefer to be called, but good humour and teamwork goes both ways... no need for anyone to be a dick about it lol 😂

I think it really depends on the doctor and what they prefer. I'd always refer to the surgeon as "Doctor", but if they ask you to call them by their first name, then it's fine.

I recently had a surgery and I was conscious during it and I remember the OR staff talking about food

I'm an ICU nurse and all the doctors, senior, junior, students etc go by first names.
I remember the first time I stopped one to ask a question and was like "Ben! Sorry, doctor Ben. Sorry, doctor" 😂

There were a few surgeons like this where I worked but there were 2 that hated being called by anything other than their first name by co-workers

At work. You address your superior as their appointed position. No matter your relationship with that individual.

It shows clear professionalism and a ability to seperate work from personal relationship. Making that someone a plus to work with.

Outside work. It's up to individual's preference.

I’m a Midwife and on the wards we always call Doctors by their first name. However, the older consultant level doctors prefer their surname being used.

You’re hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣 It’s not that formal in Australia though.

Funny story.
My dad is a surgeon (vascular) and he had a new scrub and she was just waiting patiently looking at him waiting for my dad to Introduce himself, so then after more waiting, my dad said hi my name is ……. And my favorite color is blue. What is your favorite color? 😂 funny cause I thought attendings were strict but compared with my dad.

As a nurse, I usually wait for the doctor's instruction to call them by their first name. If I don't get permission, it's Dr. They didn't go to school for a century to be called sir or pal. Lol.

Worked in nursing for over 35 years and still was Dr

I think it's always best to err on the side of being a bit more formal, until a doc expresses their preference for how to be addressed.

I loved a nurse who was called Ms and her last name which is escaping me right now, by the doctors but we, the support staff, called her Maude. If the doctors expect to be addressed by by their last name than so did she. She was an amazing nurse, she retired many years ago and is greatly missed, because she ran the floor so well. It is about half and half in the OR that I work at now.

I wouldn't call them by their first name, unless they have told me to do so..
