After Philippines, Vietnam Files Claim for Extended Continental Shelf in the South China Sea

The South China Sea, a strategic waterway with $3 trillion worth of trade passing through annually, has long been a geopolitical hotspot due to its rich oil, natural gas deposits, and fish stocks. Nations including China, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam vie for control, leading to persistent territorial disputes. Recently, Vietnam filed a claim with the United Nations for an extended continental shelf (ECS) in the South China Sea, following a similar move by the Philippines. Vietnam's claim aims to extend its continental shelf beyond the current 200 nautical miles from its baselines, asserting sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos. China, which claims nearly the entire South China Sea based on the 'nine-dash line,' strongly opposes Vietnam's submission, arguing it infringes on China's territorial sovereignty. This latest development further complicates the region's dynamics, emphasizing the importance of international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in resolving such disputes. The Philippines, meanwhile, has expressed a willingness to engage diplomatically with Vietnam, indicating a potential for cooperative resolution. As these territorial claims unfold, the international community remains vigilant, recognizing the global implications for trade, security, and regional stability. Why the Philippines is Increasing its Defense Spendings?

PH considers Vietnam as a close friend and ally. PH fisherman also trades fish with some noodles, alcohol and other foods with vietnamese fishermen while fishing in the sea. Heck PH and Vietnam regularly have friendly games in the spratly’s islands. This proves we can have civil and friendly relations with claimants. Unlike China who just bully their way into what they want.

Any country can request an extension of their EEZ, but do they have geological proof that an extension is justified. What I remember from the sea bed map is Vietnam’s EEZ boundary stops on the edge of the deepest depth of the basin. Countries can’t claim the other side of the deep basin is still claim the area being their own. It is obvious the other side of the basin is the continental shelf of the next country, the Philippines.

Malaysian leaders must be too drunk to think that the territory of Sabah which belong to the Filipino Sultan of Sulu and have been legally ruled in the NY Convention and the IC of France have the right to use Sabah as their baseline while infringing on the legitimate Philippine EEZ hugging the coastline of Palawan. It is too obvious that Malaysia obfuscating the issue by declaring excessive and ridiculous boundary.

Taiwan and China are claiming ridiculous and hilarious historical rights. What they really mean is the ones with the biggest guns get to claim the SCS. Their claim is just distractions. It is clear that Taiwan is not like-minded with the Western democracies but are still Han barbarians like the CCP.

The Philippines is the only country like-minded with Western democracies in Asia. Their claims are always 100% legitimate and they abide by the true meaning of International Laws.

Yes, China is not supposed to be in the sea. China does not have rights to the sea.

Don't mind Malaysia, it may not be serious about its claim, afraid to go against China.

When Vietnam was busy fighting to protect the country, the Chinese took the opportunity and used force to occupy the islands. The US 7th Fleet witnessed the whole incident, but they did not intervene, because they lost the battle and left in anger and humiliation.

Only South East Nations have the right to claim those seas.

Not for China and it will never be for China.

The Philippines & Vietnam have t the right to expand their territory claim.

Not for China

Vietnam (Đại Việt: 大越國) is the first country which sent the soldiers and fishermen to Paracel Islands (Hoàng Sa Islands) and Spratly Islands (Trường Sa Islands). Unluckily, China invaded Vietnam's Paracel Islands in 1974 and four islets of Spratly Islands in 1988.
