Stop Saying This To Grieving People | Costi Hinn

Even with the best intentions, Christians say some notoriously ignorant things when responding to grieving people. Grieving people don’t need timelines or shallow platitudes that minimize their pain. They just appreciate knowing that no matter what, you’re with them for the long haul.

I so appreciate this. I have been battling chronic illness for well over a decade, I’m not even keeping track anymore. The most awful thing Christians say is, you might not get your healing her, but you will in heaven. That is awful, painful, and hopeless.

3 H's: Hug, Hang Around and Hush. A lady in our church told me that and it has really stuck with me.

Costi, thank you so much for talking about this! I lost my son and I had people say really hurtful things. I never tell another parent who has lost s child, "I know what you're going through" because everyone experiences grief differently. No words can comfort a grieving parent. Words are not needed. A hug, sitting in silence with someone, holding their hand says more than words can ever say.

Amen. Buried 2 daughters. I had one NAR follower text me the most RIDICULOUS thing after my daughter passed. She got blocked.

My husband died in 2021. My daughter passed away from cancer in March 2023. Just as I was getting to where I could kinda go on, my oldest son passed away in November 2023. I felt like I couldn't even live anymore. I felt destroyed. Immediately scripture came to my mind, cast down, but not destroyed. However I couldn't do anything but sit and stare out of the window and cry. I had some pretty insensitive things said to me. Some things said were downright cruel. Your advice is really good.

Exactly right. Your presence speaks volumes.
Listen more than speaking.
Don’t say, “everything happens for a reason”.

Been there . The best is when people say nothing .

Thank you, Costi. My daughter passed away at 21. Some of the things said hurt so badly. The people whom I know were well-meaning.Then those who hugged me and cried in silence were exactly what I needed. 🙏🕊

And you would be surprised what a comforter the holy Spirit can be. He kind of patches up the emotions so I get out what I need to get out and then there is peace or strength that people or medication cannot always give .

So true, sometimes caring and showing love without words is much better than offering counsel with words like Job friends.

In other words, don't be Job's friends lol. Amen

I'd suggest people check out James White's book on Grief. You or the other suffering needs to know that you will feel things like loneliness and even potentially anger at the person who left, and how you can either come up and out of where you are or spiral deeper.

I have never said at least at least at least. A lot of times, I do my best to be gentle.

"I can only imagine what you're going through" also doesn't help.
