Hey Chuck. I'm a young guy (22) pursuing a career in IT. I recently left college about 9 months ago because I realized I was learning more on my own then what the professors were teaching me (and I was tired of accumulating loan debt) and about 6 weeks ago I started to seriously pursue my CCNA. I've been doing help desk jobs and I thought maybe I had made a mistake leaving university, but I saw your video on "CCNA vs College" and I agreed with the points you made. I just want to say that your videos motivate me to keep pushing forward for my goals. I want to be a Network Engineer as well and you help me alot. Thank you.

Chuck, Good for you man! Yes, I concur. I've worked alongside these remote and fly-in folks, off and on, for many years. I've recently decided to do my certs to take me to where I want to be in the next 3 years. It isn't a fantasy; it's strategic planning on my life, as you did with your life.

A little background: I've been in IT for over 18 years working for private sector and US government. In my career, and IT education, I learned a lot about CISCO certs and also met the remote / fly-in Cisco pros (as far back as 2000) and let me tell you, some of them are in their 60s and early 70s, still proving to be gangbusters in what they do. Although my jobs in IT have not required CISCO certs, I've always respected the difficulty of them and the folks I met doing the work. Now in my early 50s and shifting into better / healthier lifestyle mode, I've already quit the cubicle lifestyle and enjoying my life with my family in Bangkok, Thailand (I'm originally from New York). The CISCO field folks I've worked alongside have inspired and encouraged me to realize my future is now as a remote / fly-in CISCO guy, most likely in Asia.

So why am I telling you this. I felt compelled to confirm how right you are. Due to a future opportunity with great lifestyle, my buddy said to get CISCO under my belt, which was no surprise to me. In my preparation to start my studies I came across your videos and found you to speak like the experienced guys I've worked alongside - especially with the coffee elements (at home I'm a Lavazza or Illy French press guy. The siphon is also great and popular in Japan - the home of great coffee in Asia). I wanted to share with you how right you are in your ideas for your career, family, and especially work philosophy. If it's true that you only live once, make it count!

Happy Trails to you and your family.

This is crazy listening to this. I began taking courses for my CCNA a year ago with the goal to have that remote freedom but kept hearing people saying no it's a 40-70 hour work week. Always on call.. blah blah blah. You Truly just gave me the fullest confidence with this video brkrher!

Hey Chuck! Thanks for the videos. I found them very to the point, inspiring and just allows one to hope for better and at the same time engage in strategically managing your life on a medium to long time frame, which I also think is essential for a good quality of life.
I am 28yo right now, from Bucharest, Romania, EU.
I have a masters and bachelor's degree in Marketing and Business Communication and with a 2 year experience in retail banking and several years experience in sales. Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to pursue a career in marketing/advertising (because of lacking experience) and was needed to pursue an independent sales career (so I could at least support myself financialy) and at the same time had to accept a front desk job in banking (don't like the banking field, but I had no other alternatives at the time). After 1 year I was quickly promoted to financial advisor and had to manage a portfolio of several thousands of retail clients.
I honestly hated every day of work, but my results were very good because of the professionalism and implication I felt I owed myself and the employer when I accepted the job.
I did as you said, I asked myself if I could see me in say 1-2-3-5 years time doing that and I decided to quit my job.
My life was basicaly at it's lowest, I gained 20kg in 2 years, I had many minor health issues, no love life and just collapsed in a deep depression.
I just felt and knew basically it's nothing worth it, the hard painful work, 3-5h overtime almost daily, medium to low paycheck, stress, broken work life balance etc.
It's been 20 months since I left the job (no job in this time) and after the worst period of my life I realise I am not looking for a job, but a NEW LIFE because regardless of how much money you earn, if you aren't in the right place, sooner or later YOU WILL implode like I did.
So I started learning for CCNA about a month ago, mainly because I always enjoyed computers and kinda everything related to technology.
I know I am not a youngster anymore and my past education and experience don't really help in this field (although I finished a informatics high school 10 years ago) but I hope I have a chance and maybe by the time I will be 30 I will secure a decent paid job with an ok w/l ballance.
Honestly, I am a little scared of the fact that this kind of work won't give me time for my personal life, I also wish to travel and experience life different than I did until now but I guess this will have to be a risk I will have to take and eventualy make the most of what life throws at me along the way.
Well, that's my story.
I wish you (and everyone reading this) all the luck and a great life ahead!
I am always opened to any advice or feedback and greatly appreciate it.
God bless!

Hey man! I was surprised I didn't see this video until tonight.
I feel that I'm exactly where you were 5 years ago, except I only have CCNA. :)
I quit my job as a seafarer for the love of the wife and for the incoming first kid.
I hadsome job interviews but still waiting for the work from home design as well.
This video was an eye-opener for alot of people which includes me now.

Thanks for the videos and the motivation.
So amazing, lyou've got only 3, 000 subs here. But look at you now..
For me, now, I'm aiming to get at least 300 more subs to reach 1, 000.
This is great, "Make sure your career fits your lifestyle, and not the other way around."

I just relocated from my home state and trying to figure out what to do. You are right: the career should fit your lifestyle. Soon as I get home, I'm going to create a plan for myself to get my CCNA and browse remote worker jobs. Thanks again for yet another great video! Safe travels!

Good for you Chuck! Could not agree with your decision more. I'm working on the grunt work right now, but I would also love to live my life the way I want to as well. Have to earn it and move towards it. But you are proof it is possible. Very inspiring.

Watching this in 2021, remote jobs sounded so far fetched back in 2017. Network chuck a man ahead of his time!
