3 Reasons Why Japanese Hate Beards #Shorts

A lot of YouTube videos say that Japanese people really hate beards, but why is that? As far as I’ve done some research, there seem to be a few reasons.

1. Beards don’t suit Japanese men
2. There is a barbaric image
3. It is important to be humble in a business setting

The first reason is unbelievably simple.Japanese people in general have flatter faces which tend to not look so good with beards.

Also during the Edo period (1603~1868) growing beards were banned by law because it was a symbol of barbarians who engaged in gambling and street killing.

On the contrary, during the following Meiji period (1868-1912), there were many powerful people who grew beards as a form of authority under the influence of Western culture.

So some people seem to have the impression that “Having a beard = Looking arrogant/bossy.” Men themselves often avoid growing beards because it can make them look as if they lack modesty in business situations.

But of course, these are just general ideas and there are many successful Japanese people with beards. So, in the end, I think it’s important to find your own style.

An old Japanese man with a beard just looks like he's full of wisdom.

So in short, as a foreigner with a beard in Japan:
1) Not Japanese, safe
2) Already a barbarian, safe
3) Unlikely to be hired in the first place due to not being Japanese, safe
Welp

Endlessly fascinating that something as simple as a beard can have so many different societal implications across cultures

Usually when I see japanese men with beards in videos they tend to be the easy going and relaxed type of guys, usually artistically inclined

There's a Japanese man who works at a bookstore near me, and he has a full beard, surprisingly. I bought a red and white blanket they were selling for the holiday, and he held it up and asked if he looked like Santa Claus. I said that's exactly what I was thinking! He was so sweet. He said it was the first time he had grown a beard, and he did it specifically to look like Santa for the holidays here in the US. 🥰

I find that in anime, people with beards are those who look unkempt. I love beards on men though. 🥺

I like how you immediately mentioned all three points instead of the usual one point followed by detail then the next point and so on
