And the third reason is that they have very painful barbs that hurt! They’re hard to get out but worth the effort. This is not invasive everywhere but may be where you live so please look into that if you have any, just so you know what you have on your property. Anyone want to share suggestions of plants to replace barberry (Berberis thunbergii)?

Videos are done by my clients in their yards and this was done by Teresa.

As a professional gardener, I always end up kneeling in a pile of barberry clippings and impaling my knees, hands etc. with the barbs. Yet another reason to hate them! 😅

Deers love to eat the barberry shrubs and while the deers browse the barberries they deposit ticks. Deers and ticks have taken over Nova Scotia.

How do you feel about injecting root killer into stalks? Its common place out here in the PNW to deal with black berries. I always wonder about it.

Maybe try digging them up and gifting them to someone that can care for them in an indoor greenhouse? It makes me sad when someone cuts down trees and bushes like that 😅

When they're already 20 years on that spot and didn't take over the city, you can safely assume they're not planning to.

They look good, they attract bees, they are food for wildlife and they have thorns to add security to your property.
Sounds like you should get more.
