How I Trained Better for my 2nd Marathon

6 years ago I ran a marathon, but wasn't able to fully train for it (stupid hurt knee, stupid wedding), and it definitely led to some bad baaaaad results. So I decided to try it again, but this time fully train AND do strength training along with it. Did it work? Did I get destroyed again? Who's Banksy? 2 of these questions will be answered.

I ran the Philly marathon this year. My grandfather died of covid earlier this year and a month later my dad went to jail. So I wanted to honor my late grandpa and prove to myself I can respond to grief in a nondestructive way. My longest run of my life prior to training was 7 miles. I’ve been a subscriber since 2009 and always appreciated your “why not give it a go?” Attitude toward life. You have been a relatively large (for a stranger on the internet) part of my adolescence and now late 20’s and I felt partiality inspired by your first marathon video. My goals were to #1 finish #2 not poop myself and #3 finish in under 5 hours. My time was 5:00:06. So close! But I’m proud of myself because my fastest mile was mile 26 I left it all out there. Anyway thanks, Craig and congrats to you.

Im just amazed at how easy you made that every-day discipline look. You were consistent in training and did so well!

“I can do it, but I will suffer” I feel like this characterizes much of life. 😁

I laughed so hard when you were talking about how hot it was and how in so many months, you'd be complaining about how cold it was, and then you cut to the footage of you saying, "It's cold." Just kept laughing for about 30 seconds, even after you moved on to the next point. You are such a great editor. I love your videos. Also, I'm 45 and have been actively trying to live a more healthy lifestyle since July 5, 2020 after a bout with edema. Went to the doctor back then and stepped on the scale and nearly had a heart attack. Heaviest I'd ever weighed. Here I am two years later, and I'm down 42 pounds. Today, I logged my fastest pace yet. Only ran for 2.71 miles, but sustained a pace of 8:46 / mile. It's no marathon. But my journey has been about hitting small goals, then moving on to bigger ones. On my first run two years ago, I ran .2 miles, then walked .2 ... I'd run .2 then walk .2. Rinse and repeat. How far I've come. Yes, you're a great video editor and content creator, but you're inspiring. I love how you're always trying new things to help you become a better person. That's exactly the kind of guy/husband/father I've tried to be the past two years. Not everything works. But you never know what will unless you try. OH ... and the 20, 000 steps a day video ... you have no idea how much I identify with that one ... knowing exactly how many steps it takes to complete one lap around the interior of my house. I've not been under 10, 000 steps since February 14. My daily average on the year is almost 12, 000 / day. You've inspired me to do 20, 000 steps a day for all of August, and I can't wait. I'm a late-night walker. 10pm-1am ... thats my jam. Oh, how I cherish those late-night walks. 45 years old, gonna be 46 this year, and I'm in the best shape of my life. Thank you for being an inspiration. (And a fellow Wisconsinite.) ;)

So I have hated running since I was really young - I'm a gymnast, powerlifter, Air Force vet....but something about running. ANYWAY because the world enjoys its' cruel irony, my daughter to run. She joined her elementary school's track team, and we finished our first 5K together right before Thanksgiving. I was so proud of her. I was so proud of me! We're going to do a 10K in in the Spring, and it'll be the longest (voluntary) run of my life.

That being said, I still believe in aliens far more than I believe in a runner's high.

My hometown holds an annual 5k + half + full marathon day, and having never ran more than 2miles, I signed up for the 5k. It was tough, but I learned that my body with training could do it! Then I did the half. It was also tough but I figured, if I can get THIS far, why not the full?

So the next year I did the full marathon. If you told me 3yrs prior I'd run a marathon, I'd call you a looney toon.

Congrats, Craig!

I've been taking my little brother to the gym - he's been getting really into running 5k's and is still too young to be at the gym without adult supervision. While we've been there I have stopped being 1/2 as fast as him and am now only 2/3 as fast as him - I'm catching up and it feels real good!

Your family at the finish line was so heartwarming. I may or may not have wanted to shed a tear, but I didn't.

As a Madisonian who recently betrayed everyone by moving to the PNW this year it was nice to see my favorite city. And damn congrats on the marathon! You did it!

I'm really enjoying the challenges and lifestyle-choice exploration in your recent videos. Thank you!
They resonate far better than some other channels featuring people, who seem to set impressive challenges, yet don't have to also manage a family, a very full-time job, being back at university, running a household, and the need to enjoy a social life (not to mention being over 40)!!
Looking forward to hearing more about your sobriety journey!

I just wanted to let you know that I joined copilot after your earlier videos (I think I started in May), and it has totally changed my relationship with working out. Thank you thank you thank you. Would never have done it without your endorsement and explanation of why it worked for you.

Gosh, I'm always glad to come back to a wheezy vid and see that the... weeziness? is still so strong. Your vids always remind me of really great times through my life. I kind of teared up too - not just because you did SO GREAT and it was so sweet seeing your family there at the end, but then it made me so nostalgic for older days when I'd sit around with my friends watching some weird guy with a beard make 3min videos and we all just thought those times would never end. Congrats on the big marathon achievement, Craig. God we're all old now lol

That is awesome! I'm 31 and I've not trained properly in 6 years. Debating throwing myself in the deep end and signing up to the London Marathon in April to motivate me to start moving my butt. Thoughs, and tips internet?

I don't run, but I also don't think I've walked any further than about 6 miles in one day. Though I think in kilometres, which is about 10km. Well done, Craig! Who knew that proper preparation and carefully following steps determined by experts that things would work out?

Maybe this is weird to say to an internet stranger, but I’ve been watching for a long time, and I’m proud of you.
