EEVblog #843 - David's rPrint 3D Printer Design

David tells us how he designed his rPrint 3D printer, the printer for pirates!
A university project he has been working on for the last 9 months.
Everything is custom, including the world's lightest weight direct drive extruder head, Sarrus linkage build plate, linear rail guides, and his awesome bubble enclosure.
Not to mention his own custom controller, gcode interpreter, and highly optimised C++ string libraries.

Fantastic work, David! Clearly this is a product of skill, passion, and determination. Would love to see your rPrint in action...maybe a follow-up demo video?

Don't leave it alone in the lab.Would hate to see it on a "tear down tuesday".

I'm very happy for you, David, and congrats on the award you earned for this handsome bit of kit. Love the platform, the bubble case, and the effort that went behind getting it as speedy as possible. I hope you guys will post an update video of it printing something.

Wow, people actually finish their senior design project and make them that good?

I have to say I'm impressed by David's broad knowledge regarding and how he makes it all work together. If I were an employer and looking for an engineer like him, I'd hire him on the spot ! Well done !

Davette, you went way above and beyond on this. It like you did multiple capstone projects. At first I thought it was unimpressive and cliche doing a 3D printer. Then, you mentioned all the stuff you designed from scratch and then I was immensely impressed. Very nicely done. Hope you get a A+

clicked the video, then read the title, rolled the eyes as to why the heck did i press a boring vid on another 3d printer and then i saw this thing in a seizure mode, really impressive, love your style of innovation and reasons for them, keep it up

I am very much a novice at 3D printing but I know enough to appreciate the clever design of this printer. Well done David.

Davids nature of being extremely picky and accurate about what he says (e.g. the dual motors "here and there") makes him to seem extremely likeable! Cheers to him

That is very impressive. I do so love a dyed in the wool geek.
Really well deserved award I'm sure. Some of the aspects are very impressive. Was particularly impressed with the main axis mounting, and taking into account the bringing down of the resonant frequency by using the mass as you did. I also loved the linear guides, the work surface mounting, using the one motor, and the extruder itself.
I can't wait to see it in action. It sounds superbly tunable.
David (2) should indeed go far. Whoever gets to snap him up will not be disappointed I'll be bound.
Excellent stuff.

Wow. When I first saw David appear in Dave's videos, I thought what a lucky kid to have a mentor like Dave. Now I'm wondering who the lucky one is. Well done David.

Both thumbs up for above and beyond uni graduation project! I know how it feels, all others are doing easy stuff while you sweat, but nothing beats finishing with a bang!

Big props to David for rolling with his own code!
There goes the "don't reinvent the wheel" saying.

superb job David! Brave for choosing C2000 for that application and I'm certain you learned a huge amount in the process. You're obviously very talented and highly motivated, and will make a great engineer. Well done!
