EEVblog #520 - Michael's 3D Printer

Показать описание
Michael from the Melbourne Connected Community Hackerspace talks about his large build area modular dual independent extruder 3D printer design project.
Not much electronics talk here, it's mostly about the hardware build.
As usual, if you don't like this type of content, don't watch it.

The tubing he used for the frame is some pretty awesome stuff, nicely done mate! Pretty good saving too in comparison.

Several of us Aussie model railroad hobbiests use this same 25mm square aluminium section for high strength / low weight bases for train layouts. Very strong but lightweight for easy transport. Great stuff and the joiners are strong and easy to use too..

LOTs of designs out there with real machines. For hobby work, a number of people have created systems based on using lasers or projectors to harden liquid resin. Amazing detail there. Also, there are systems based on a print head suspended on three arms. That's still an extruder, though. For commercial, there are ones that can print colored adhesive on a powder, and others that laser sinter powdered materials.

For heating the bed, I've moved to using an AC (110v here in the US), 550 watt heater and a solid state relay. heats VERY FAST.

Please make a video describing your difficulties. It would provide useful perspective for aspiring 3D printing newbies such as myself.

I was curious and checked an online bearing calculator. I assumed the bearing to be a 608-2Z, and played with the load parameters up to pretty unrealistic values. Long story short, it is more than fine to take a regular deep groove ball bearing for this purpose.

As someone that built a reprap fairly early on (Sells Mendel), I had high hopes for 3D printing and still do. That said, I have yet to be truly impressed with any FDM based 3D printer for the engineering projects I undertake, the accuracy is just not there on any of the home printers I have had the pleasure of using.

I have since built a CNC miller, and I am far happier with the results. The UV stereolithography printers look very promising though.

I love this guy !! Hope I'll see him again soon on your channel Dave. Funny thing is that he has a higher words bandwidth than you !! Very very neat project indeed, millions of years better that this Makerbot carboard box thing...

FWIW: Michael can waffle on like Dave, so I'm amazed that this video is only 20 mins long! ;)

Why do they not put position encoder in these things ? Go through all that trouble and then drive it with open-loop stepper motors ? That's crazy !

What happened? I have seen a bunch of people have issues with the firmware.

Simple, all currencies have independent value. So by stating the type of currency the real value can be found. If i had stated 400 pounds the economic value would be entirely different. You cannot simply assume that everyone is using the same currency thus the type must be stated.
