Dave & Sagan score some more server PC's from the dumpster.
Will they work?
Will they be Dual Xeon & Core i7 Processors?

why the heck do i never find 24GB and i7's in the garbage!

My last dumpster score was disappointing, an dell server with dual p3's at a whooping 733mhz!
and 2gb DDR1 !

The Intel Pro 1000 cards are the go-to cards for servers and are generaly quite good, they are supported by VMware out of the box and the Linux drivers are generally decent as well.

Note that the NICs are actually PCI-express, so the board does have PCI-e

I've said it before, but I really need to find a higher class of dumpster.

what I love about this video is not the computers but the way you speak and treat your son. I think its pretty cool to have you as a dad. sagan's a lucky kid :)

The NIC is a 1000GB Intel Pro/1000 PCI-e x4 card.. a great NIC!

Wow, an i7-950. That's amazing, it's still such a good chip.

One place where old RAM has helped me in the past was with old sampling synth workstations. They almost always used old RAM standards to begin with. I was able to grab some old PC RAM and upgrade one of my Yamahas years back.

Its a shame that computers become outdated far too fast, most older machines are quite usable as an ordinary pc.

I literally just found a 42" samsung TV in front of my apartment's communal dumpster. My girlfriend is the electronics expert here, but after watching many of your videos and with her help, I can't want to tear it apart! Cheers!

Dave just spending his evening dumpster diving with his kid. Classic.

I'm a little confused whenever people who aren't involved in IT/etc more directly talk about Intel's "i7" and "Xeon" processors as though they are rating the CPU very heavily based on that name. The actual architecture, specifications, socket and performance of each i7 and Xeon, compared to other CPUs, varies immensely based on what its model number is and what year it was made; a Haswell i5 can easily outperform a Nehalem architecture i7 or Xeon 55XX in nearly every desktop usage case, for one of many examples. I think it came about via the sensationalization of the release of the first Core i7 (on Nehalem) in 2008. Since then, though, Intel has released many dozens more different kinds of i7 on half a dozen different architectures and they vary wildly depending on how recent they are and what specifications they have.

LOL, when he said "give me 2 thumbs up" Sagan showed 2 fingers on each hand. Pretty cool since that means he knows what number 2 is, at that age... I sense an electronics/computer nerd in the making.

I still love my X58 machine. 6 years old at the end of this month. Over 50k hours. I upgraded from the inital i7-920 and 6GB to an 980X and 12GB when it was about 3 years old. Very happy with how it still keeps up with everything I can throw it yet being such a 'old' machine. I am gettin antsy for a replacment, but, wallet says no, so she stays.

you should look inside the others in the dumpster anyway, some modern motherboards have VGA on them, still. as of this year they're supposed to 100% drop VGA as a port altogether.

This was great. Oh how I've done this frankenstein computer's on the curb thing many times. With my boy too! They are worth it just for the learning experience. I still grab them all.
